Jomox Alphabase - thoughts and alternatives?

These curves look like all the samples I recorded from the XBase 888 - at they ALL slam like hell

You may have found the secret

think will stick with my Rytm MK2 and modular drums. The obtuse UI would drive me nuts on the Alphabase Jomox! Right now, the Perkons looks like the most fun drum machine to jam on.

just got mk1 for a decent price so reading everything i can with interest - got bored with rytm and tempest so am keen to see if jomox does the business

Nice, enjoy! All of those drum machines are amazing, very different and deep.

My main gripe with the mk1 is the panning through the stereo out just doesn’t work. This has been remedied with the mk2. That said having a mixer and using the individual outs is the best way to use it.

The USP of the Alpha Base is the sound, it’s really a cut above and it reliably works in a mix with a minimum of/if any fucking around.

does panning from headphone out work on mk1?

I didn’t think to try that whilst I had one, sorry. IT says I the manual it uses something called phase panning. I don’t know what that means I just know it isn’t the kind of panning I wanted.

It does do this weird thing though where if you plug a jack into the individual out the panning then works in the stereo out. nothing comes out if its centred but if you pan it then appears from the stereo outs.

Don’t let what I’m saying put you off, it’s a killer machine and at some point I will buy the mk2. People dis the sequencer but I really liked it, and there’s something about the swing on the AB that’s just so groovy.

I see ppl are using this machine for techno and in a lesser degree house. How about other genres? Like idm or more experimental? Does it make sense to use it for something other than techno when we have boxes like analog rytms and syntakts?

It still has a sample engine, still has nice filters, you can tune the analog instruments within a nice range and modulate externally, it has a simpler FM engine that sounds nice and FX.

No reason why you couldn’t use it with IDM and experimental/atonal, as those are about approach and intent.

I would say that it would help the approach having external midi control of parameters and steps versus having it all sequenced in the internal patterns/plocks.

I’ll second that, the FM synth makes some really cool sounds. The Mbrane instrument I was less enthusiastic about, its got a lot of range but I struggled to make anything satisfying with it.

That kick drum though

I’m sure you’re right but all ive been finding are techno demos on the net and one or two house… Would love to hear something else tbh

I am working on some electro stuff and it slaps. Nothing to show for it yet but I can let you know if you’re interested when I got something?

Using it together with DT2, sequencing and sampling.

Yes pls! Sounds great! i’m certainly interested!

What would you use for sequencing IDM currently?

Can the Alphabase sound soft?
I remember the Xbase888 was anything but gentle

I have DN2, Syntakt and OT mk2. Id prefer to use its own sequencer if possible ofc

i cancelled the order for the alphabase mk1 after a bit of reading and deeping the ā€˜whats the point of more gear??’

Hehe i totally understand the sentiment!
I have DN2, ST, OT mk2, SP-404 mk2, Vermona DRM-1 and LXR-02. Really do i need another ā€˜drum thing’?

yup - i am stick with my two a4 mk1s for now and perhaps will recall my dt1 and md from loan if i ever feel the need rather than splashing the ever diminishing cash…

It can definitely sound soft. It’s difficult to describe, but I love making kicks that are simultaneously soft and punchy.

I don’t know if I succeed, but here’s a taste of it (all drums are AB MK1 except the little percussion arp that comes in a few minutes into the track).
