JoMoX Alpha Base Analog Drum Synthesizer

The layout of Moonwind and the FM synth is really bad, so much unused space and weird placement of knobs and displays.

yeah if only they can improve the UI and sequencer right? I love Jomox sound but the user design is atrocious!

Yeah I love mine but I usually sequence it with something else. The freezing is pretty shocking as well.

Honestly, I don’t like this new screen and the add of more buttons, they doesn’t match with the vintage aspect of the front panel…

There is no new features on the MK2, just few direct access buttons, but it’s already work pretty well on the MK1, and I found the workflow really good personally. The sequencer is basic, like any classic drum machines, it’s not an Elektron device, and you can use external sequencer with separate midi channels.

Don’t care about a bigger screen, but it seems there is some improvements on the pan circuitries (bleeding issues I guess), and independent output for headphone. I wonder if it will be possible to send my actual MK1 for this little improvements (these are only a few more components), I know that Jurgen had already made hardware updates for Sunsyn users, so it seems quite possible to me.

I am not interested in the MK2 and I am very attached to my unit that I just find prettier and more natural.

For the rest, the OS will remain the same on both versions, so they will receive the same updates (improvements to p locks to come, especially with 3 p-locks per step against 2 actually).

Any of you guys sequencing the Alpha Base with an external sequencer?

I’m just asking since I just acquired one, and being used to the Elektron sequencer and working ITB, this just feels a bit painful to program

Small things like how you set the p-locks, and the fact that you can only p-lock one parameter per step, and the p-lock KIT/SEQ page only shows CC numbers, not the actual parameter name.

But the sound of the machine is amazing! So I’d really love to be able to use it.

So I’m wondering, since we’re just dealing with CC numbers, it has to be a sequencer that’s better suited for p-locking complex sequences than the built-in one. Maybe some Elektron devices or something ITB (I have a hybrid setup with Ableton, Push, Elektron boxes and some midi synths).

Octatrack comes to mind, but I don’t have it anymore. Just have A4 and DN. And ITB I use mostly Stepic.

Man I wish I could just mash together an AR and the Jomox. The AR performance features and the sounds of the Jomox would make the best drum machine in human history!

I’ve sequenced it with the DN before. Nothing fancy didn’t do any cc p-locking, just chromatic stuff. Works great channels 1-11 handles each voice accordingly and channel 16 does every voice mapped out by four key increments. Example c-b# will be the kick e-g will be Mbrane etc…

I’ve not used the Alphabase but I’ve sequenced their Airbase lots with a Cirklon.

It responds really quickly to incoming MIDI, noticeably faster than the Roland boutiques/ Vermona drm mk3 I was also sequencing lots at the time. So I imagine the alpha base will be as good if not better.

And can p lock away via CC’s. Won’t be quite as tight as internal sequencer of course as incoming MIDI is always serial.

Great to hear, you’re the second person to mention the Cirklon sequencer to me in a single day, I might just look into that one.

I’ve started to get used to the internal sequencer. But what I’m mostly missing is to LFO some parameters. Or to run a polymeter / polyrhythmic sequences on a parameter, to get more complex and organic sequences going. Love doing that kind of stuff on f.x. the A4.

I sequence the Alpha Base with a Hapax. It works well.

And what are you sequencing, just the triggers or parameters as well?

Generally I’ll sequence mine with a Cirklon or DT.

I like using the Digitakt seeing as obviously you’ve got the 8 internal DT tracks as well for extra messing.

I have no experience with the Cirklon. But I have both the A4 and the DN.

So you rather want to sequence from your DT you say than your Cirklon. Why do you prefer that? I’m just a bit curious about the Cirklon.

Are you able to send out f.x. LFOs to parameters?

I wouldn’t say ā€˜prefer’, necessarily. With the DT everything is just really convenient in terms of using sounds from the Jomox and the DT together. I’m more used to the DT so maybe it’s a muscle memory thing.

The Cirklon would be the one for modulation, if that’s your thing. Check out Aux Events Accumulators in the manual. Many possibilities.

Would you easily be able to sequence all the channels, and do parameter locks as well? (They are sent as CC messages)

How about sending LFOs?

I’ve been doing this with my Digitone, but it’s limited to 4 channels, and only 1 LFO per channel. Would love more channels and more LFOs

Did any of the workflow frustrations that people have reported get improved with the MKII version of the Alpha Base? Are people who bought it happy with it?

It does not exist yet.

Mark 2 will be released in October.

One cool feature which will come at some point is modulation of panning
