If you want it to be more of a bass, you probably want different pickups. I’m not 100% positive on the squier model but traditionally those are jaguar pickups. The squier bass VI is supposed to be really good bang for the buck, but especially if it already has those upgrades it’s probably pretty close to maxed out except for pickups and set up. I’m sure it will take some getting used to, I don’t remember which model geronimo got but his might be the vintera and I think he’s pretty stoked on it still.
Awesome! Been watching/reading about the VI recently. Thought about taking the Squier for a test drive. My only question is it normal guitar size? Hard to gauge with a few videos where it looked super bulky.
The Squier is 30” scale, so same as a short scale bass, but a bit longer than a standard guitar
Edit- it doesn’t feel in any way bulky to me, but before this I was using a baritone guitar in my sets. I’m also a bass player used to playing 34” scale
The few videos I watched it sounds amazing! I’d love to try one but nothing local ATM. Good luck with yours!
Does anyone have experience with a vintage-sounding set of Jazz pickups that are humbucking? My JB is pretty noisy in my studio and, despite having a lovely core sound, recording it is it’s primary purpose. If I could find a good set that didn’t loose too much of the single-coil, modest output flavor I might swap the pickups out.
I’ve owned the Squier version, the Fender Pawnshop version, and presently I have the Vintera II. The Vintera II is the best one out of the box IMO. I thought about modding my Squier when I had it, but got lazy LOL.
I haven’t owned them but check out the fralin split jazz, they’re supposed to be noiseless (hum cancelling). fralin stuff is pretty great in general.
I was looking a while back for my knock off JB and the DiMarzio ultra Jazz pickups had fantastic reviews. Keep in mind I never tried them and I’m new to all this jazz!

Any Warwick fans?
I do not gig with them often at this time, but below are my German-made Streamer Jazzman LX 5 and Corvette ProLine 5 basses:
I mostly gig with my Ernie Ball Music Man Stingray 5 H or Fender American Elite Jazz 5 bass:
I played a Corvette 6 for a couple of years, but it was so damn heavy that I had to sell it. Beautiful instruments.
Any recommendations for a cheap, decent bass for a non-bass player? I figure it would be good to have one around but I don’t want to spend the world on it. I’ve bought cheap guitars before that werw awesome, but know little to nothing about basses so thought I’d ask those of you who know
Don’t know how much cheap you mean, but I would recommend G&L Tribute line. If you would like a Precision like bass, there is LB-100. If you would like Jazz like bass, they have JB or JB-2 (jazz bass in precision shaped body).
If you want even cheaper, people say good things about Harley Benton basses. But I don’t have experience with those - some of them are in suspicious category “how can it be even produced with this price tag”…
I did hear a difference
Not sure if available in your part of the globe but I have a Monoprice jazz bass that is insanely good. Especially since I got it on sale for $140 shipped!
Define cheap? I’d go passive in this case and pick a p bass versus a jazz bass for the most studio versatility. So figure out what you want between those 2 and then drop a max price and I can tell you what I’d do. I’ve been a session or touring player majority of my life and many of my basses that ended up on records were used music store finds.
Also 4 or 5 string? If it was me doing electronic music I’d go 5 string passive j. That low B is fantastic and makes the bass more genre versatile. Only thing is you need to practice muting or you will ruin recordings with a low ringing string.
I just bought a Squier Classic Vibe Jazz bass and it’s crazy how good it is.
