Why though? I mean, why abandon a product that is so appealing to the general audience (not just music professionals)? Like, I imagine (without actual knowledge) that 10,000 people buy Model:Samples, but only 1,000 buy Digitakt. I may be wrong
I’m not sure about this. The general audience is on the “more is more” mentality: more tracks, more storage, more polyphony, more FX, more options, more and more.
Models are appealing for those that value simple, straight forward, no distractions workflows… and who go deep in the Elektron sequencer capabilities in turn.
This is a good point. I just got a DT1 as an upgrade from my trusty m:s, and while I’m still in my “learn by making awful music” era with the OGDT, it’s also got me appreciating just how straightforward the m:s is.
I had assumed I’d just replace the m:s with the dt1 - and I’m still pretty sure I will - but I use the m:s way more as a simple drum machine + sequencer for a couple other things, than I do as a drum computer. With the DT I’m kind of like… Do I need all this power?
Like I said, I’m still learning the DT and it takes time to learn a piece of gear well enough to know how I want to use it. And i am stoked to have all this power. But now I’m thinking I’ll probably hang onto the m:s as well - maybe they will be best friends? Who knows.
Anyway all of which is to say, the strength of the m:s is in its directness imho. I’m not sure what an m:s 2 could do that wouldn’t get in the way of that.
I have all 3 Elektron samplers, OT, DT, M:S, and while in THEORY anything you do in the M:S can be done and expanded in the others in REALITY is just faster and more efficient to do THAT in the M:S.
So I have realized that the point is to use each box for what it excels at, either the unique features or streamlined workflow.
For example, I feel it’s a waste of tracks/effort to load one shots in DT or OT if there is an M:S around, or do slices/TimeStretchs on the M:S having a DT or an OT next to it.
It would be too much. Considering Elektron politics in terms of new devices we can’t have both. You need to spend those precious coins on 2 devices. Otherwise you will bankrupt this magnificent company.
Even with 2 devices, though… I would gladly obtain both version 2.
Despite the joke, I’m not against the way they invent new devices. I see “less is more” as a win-win situation. I have a device that can do almost everything. But I spend more time on a device that does way less.
