Good god, I just read about this Butterfly Keyboard thing… Are they seriously that bad? How long do you think it might take Mac to fix this?
Mate I’m serious
The butterfly keyboard is borderline unusable for any sort of typing.
Even Mac is repairing these for free…
Just pay the extra for the TB of storage tbh. Now that Apple is soldering the drives to the motherboard it’s very difficult to upgrade further down the line, so you might as well future-proof it if you’re already dropping like 2k on a laptop.
Also what’s the point in having super-fast internal storage when you’ll then have to stream sample libraries from slower external drives and deal with the hassle of more cables and stuff to carry?
Yes, the keyboards are garbage, but will you really be doing a lot of typing?
Windows is OK but does need occasional babysitting and is not as solid as it could be, even on Win 7. It’s also hard to pick hardware that is guaranteed to work well. I use a W530 Lenovo Thinkpad, and it works well for my uses, but it weighs a ton and the battery is shit. YMMV
don’t use laptops for music production windows or mac, use a tower , laptop are used for live and then throw it in the crowd, you will be a rock star !
That is something to note about PC vs. Mac. If you aren’t into researching hardware, just stick with Mac.
I respectfully disagree.
Go back 5 years and you this statement would be true, the Mac’s of yore were excellent machines. I used one for years.
Now though, taking into consideration there have been no really important innovations in CPU tech with the exception of AMDs Ryzen (which will never even be fitted to a Mac) the market has become more competitive because apple have failed to innovate on their machines elsewhere.
I know I have been hawking the razer blade but look st the features it has vs Mac:
Inclusions like a 6 core processor, full capacitive ips touch screen, backlit keybaord with proper keys, a more comprehensive I/O all in a aluminium cnc machined unibody.
For me there is a clear winner. Also for the comments above about unnecessary processor cores, ram and GPU, why walk away from those extra features if it can potentially cost you less for the top of the line Mac?
True, I should’ve probably clarified my statement with stick to better brands like Razor and Lenovo vs. HP, which has historically been hit or miss. HP may have gotten better in the recent years.
512gig is enough.
What if I just get the 2015 model? (Pre Shitty slider bar, type C, Butterfly Keys)
If you are set on a Macbook, buying used is not a bad idea. Only thing is that the amount of money people want for used macbooks is pretty high, apparently they are made of golden unicorn-bones or something.
On the windows side I have been drooling over a Dell XPS for a while now, they seem very good. Or one of those thinkpad x1 carbons from Lenovo. I have a desktop with windows 10 and an old macbook pro. When I’m updating that I will leave the apple world for good, just because it is a kind of stifling echosystem, and I don’t like what they are doing with their peripherals.
As for the storage, I think you will be fine with 512. Just don’t get 256. I have that, and it is a constant battle against it filling up.
512 GB is enough. I have 256 on my mac. I essentially have Ableton, Pro tools and plugins on it. Libraries and Project’s files on external HD. You can invest in a external SDD for large sample libraries if money is not a problem.
