Is 512 GB of laptop storage enough for Producers?

Getting a new laptop. Imac is old, HDD drive is painfully slow, and I want something I can carry my whole work with me. Looking into a macbook pro. They have ones that have 512SSD storage. I’m so use to having 1TB. Never reached that limit, but do you still think 512 GB is enough? Especially these days, when some applications can include over 40GB of content.

side note:
I am pretty dead set on mac. However, might be a chance to move to PC since I see that these things can have more storage space and even better specs for less price. But I really want to to know what i’m sacrificing when moving to mac to PC, before I consider this.

2 gig is

I wouldn’t worry about it, you could just get an external hd when you need it.

Only you can answer this question ! I recorded two albums with a 2003 mac / logic 4 and everything went smooth. but i also recorded orchestras and for that you need more than a laptop 512… See my point ? What do you want to record ? What soft and prog will you use ? Etc. Give us more infos if you want that we cook bread for you :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

That’s pretty much what I’ve had for a few years. I was worried it wouldn’t be enough but external hard drives sort you out. I run Live, Reaktor, Traktor, Photoshop, Premiere and loads of others without a problem. You’ll be fine :+1:

Ableton 10
I have very little plug ins. More of a hardware guy.
Stricly music. No other things to use this computer for other than just maybe the essential microsoft office and web browsing.
Maybe Photoshop for album art
I already have a large sample library however.

Get a razer blade

Will streaming samples from an external HDD put a lot of work on the computer/applications causing it to go slow?

Yeah it does fits my spec pref. But what am I sacrificing when moving from mac to PC?

These days nothing…

What about this whole “issues with drivers” stuff i’m hearing from a lot of PC users?

I’ve been using windows 10 for a year now and coming from a Mac I must say I’m pretty impressed.

I haven’t faced any driver issues with any of my hardware including a 2018 m audio interface. Was literally plug and play. But that’s just my experience. I’m sure others can weigh in.

I spend a lot of time on computer/tech forums and the general consensus is that windows 10 has negated the whole pc vs Mac debacle. Macs are still great machines. But for the money I could get a beast of razer with touch screen, rgb keyboard etc

256 GB is the perfect size you can re-locate any VST libraries on an external drive.
The less sized is the system + software disk the less time it will take to restore the backup

Streaming VSTs and or samples from external won’t cause applications to slow down?

If your external drive is fast like real Thunderbolt or USB3… I never had problem… (Komplete Ultimate, huge Omnisphere, Izotope, FXpansion libraries i have It all on my Libraries HD)

Work perfectly to me.
With the advantage when i restore my backup it take only 20 minutes because of the Music Libraries not included in the system disk.

My System disk is 256GB.
My backup disk is a Samsung T3 SSD only for restore purpose. (256GB)
Music Libraries are on a USB3 External.

For some software and VST : Symlink is your friend

I’ve been trying to hold out for a new 2018 Macbook Pro update, but I’m on the verge of getting a 6-core Razer instead.

The only big turn offs for mac for me is:

1.$$$$$$
2. This Type C usb nonsense

These could lead to a tipping point of converting. maybe…

Then you’ll be fine…

If their new offerings aren’t 6-core, I’m definitely not interested. I’m concerned about the butterfly keyboards they’ve been using; they definitely need to fix this asap. Also, the lack of ports is not ideal to me.

I wonder if they are going to continue the who Typre C inputs. Or change it back to USB.
