It’s such a drag when things need to escalate so much over gear. It’s just gear and it’s really fun to make music with.
I do kinda take issue with any DTII vs TV arguments because they’re both amazing in different ways. It comes off a bit silly when I hear all the things DTII can do that the TV can’t without flipping it back to what the TV can do that the DTII can’t. It’s a disingenuine argument. There are great reasons to buy either or both. Or even something else entirely.
I bought the TV pretty quickly after release, having no illusions that it wasn’t fully mature yet. But from the get go, it had the best sound quality of any Elektron box to date, polyphonic samples is huge for me, higher track count, much more memory, more super interesting fx and new ways to use them as well as the first 256 step sequencer on an Elektron box. And some of this came with caveats. Pros outweighed the cons for me.
The weirder, more obvious issues like midi timing were things I had confidence would get sorted in short order. There’s a ton of things I wish Elektron would do on their modern gear, but none of those things are stopping me from making music now.
Aside from some of the obvious mystery quirks in the TV, the main things that top my wish list are page looping and more advanced time stretching.
I’ve been ignoring this thread and it’s kind of comforting to know it’s still a shitshow
Had the Tonverk for a week. Really enjoyed it. Love the Granular engine. Sold it to get more Modular stuff. Will get another next year…great machine!
Im currently working with S4, Tonverk, Daw and modular.
I find it a bit overwhelming with all the stuff and i’m thinking to either keep the Tonverk or S4. I’m leaning a bit towards keeping S-4 because I think it works better than Tonverk with daw and modular, but idk.
would be happy to hear your inputs
STOOOOP!!!
I just listenend to the 4 tracks i made on it before sending it back. They sound lo-fi (that’s my “fault”) but very unique. I used a lot of effects and i think i need one in my life again…
Having done the year of NGNY using a DTII only, I’ve got myself a Tonverk, and an 0-coast to feed it bits of audio.
I’ve been playing around with it for a few days and this machine is my favourite Elektron box I’ve used by quite a way, it’s what I wanted from DTII/OT and to some degree the +FX.
It’s kind of blowing my mind with possibilities currently and welcomes exploration to me. The effects routing and sequencing options are vast and it seems to have led me places I hadn’t expected, even when turning it on to learn a feature or two, which is great.
Polyphony, very happy to have this, and now with Grainer, and comparably very generous effect options, very nice Elektron!
This looks like a superb and very beautiful sounding combo. I hope to hear some of what you make with it soon!
thank you, very happy with these choices and it feels great after a year of the DTII only.
I’ll be sure to share some clips once I’ve delved into them both!
Congrats, you’ve deserved this and surely have a lot better experience with it than if you had jumped on it when it released, was buggy and would have made you fuck up NGNY! I‘m sure you can appreciate it a lot more now.
thanks Azzarole! yeah it seems I drifted past the storm.
congrats ![]()
I feel the same way about tonverk. most things I decide I want to do next I can do with it. so many possibilities. so good.
I’m slightly embarrassed to say after being on the fence about Tonverk as a $2200+ CAD purchase, I sold it and within a month was missing it and repurchased, luckily got a nice discount on it. It may not be my go to hardware but it will be staying this time and I’m excited for what the future holds. Slicing and timestretch would be very welcome as a sample workstation. I know it’s more melody than rhythm focused but it could really be a powerhouse if they allowed the subtracks to be slice machines or, you know, add a slice machine that’s already been coded on the new platform ala Digitakt II.
Try splitting your setup? It’s tempting to try and use everything for every composition but it’s not necessary.
Such a great combo! I really miss the 0-Coast sometimes, but after it got me addicted to eurorack I went to built his big brother
.
Modular is really great for combinig with the TV, even more when there is Oxi involved!
Got the Oxi and the rack. Now need the Tonverk and I will be right there with ya.
Same here.
yeah there’s a lot to explore here!
nice I hope you’re happy with it, looks wild. I checked out Mimeophone a while back and it looks/sounds very cool.
Thanks pidgeo. yeah i’m really looking forward to getting into this more.
Great write-up. I’m curious have the sync issues been fixed? I’d be using it alongside my other gear and need it to keep solid timing as it will handle a lot of drums and rhythms.
I honestly wouldn’t know. For at least 6 months I’ve been typically working with only one box at a time, two maximum. So I can really only speak to the TV/DN2 combo at the moment. With TV as master clock, it syncs with DN2 very nicely, but pattern changes are still not great. I’ve been told by some who flip it and make DN2 master, pattern change works as expected. Sorry I can’t be of more help ![]()
Thank you Elektron for putting an auto sampler into TV
! I‘ve spent the last two days sampling some of my favorite synth patches in the background while doing chores. I doubt that I would do this without the autosampler. The release time function is a godsend! It also works pretty flawlessly these days - except that there’s some things like glide it just can’t capture for understandable reasons.
I‘d love to later sample all of these into XY to have my library available in a portable format. But the fact that I have to press each note and then sample manually makes me not want to do it. It’s a good system that has the advantage of also working with non MIDI gear, but a pain in the ass compared to TV when sampling synths.
