Introducing Tonverk

i get there has been a mixed response to this synth

it’s worth noting that with the leak everyone got super excited guessing what it was and what features it had and that was fun to get caught up in the anticipation

now its here and a lot paople are outraged or disappointed and thats valid as it does feel like its not fully featured

i got one and have been playing around with it

subtracks are amazing
polyphony is amazing
routing is deeeeeeep and this coupled with new effects is awesome

for me an extra 2 inputs for mixing in other gear would be amazing

and some more sample machines slice stretch grid and repitch

i feel that would make it my studio brain forever

my opinion is subjective of course

According to the manual, there is only a 0.5 dBu difference between the inputs and outputs. And actually, the level of headphone out and inputs seem to be at unity, exactly… suggesting that the designers thought any loopback you might want to do should be made through hp out perhaps?

Now, there are reports that samples seem to play back quietly internally… but I cannot gain any insight on that until I my TV arrives tomorrow. The unit could have eccentric gain structure like the OT, where you actually need to use varying output levels depending on the monitoring path for unity levels…

You know what Tonverk actually reminds me of a little? NI Molekular.

Bunch of sequence-able effects blocks, customisable routing.

But it also has configurable feedback loops and morphing/scenes…

Just copying some samples over, willing to overlook some early rough edges but I hope Elektron recognizes that $2200 CAD plus tax isn’t exactly unpaid beta tester pricing, and to be clear, with panel labels being non-functional, multi sampling being borderline unusable, and the wireless connectivity (and related feature set) being unavailable, we are absolutely beta testers.

The problems with the multi-sampling is fair cop, but building the infrastructure so it can be expanded with future updates is not. That’s just the nature of the game now; you’re not building a static instrument anymore, you’re building a living one. The expectation is that anything made today will have new updates over years. Just look at all those people whose response to the Tonverk announcement was “that’s great, but where is my DTII/DNII/Syntakt update?”.

you are spitting facts

You’re not wrong. I got the DT quite late in its lifetime and loved it. So I later bought the Analog Heat +FX and DT2 and DN2 on announcement.
What these buys have taught me is that you shouldn’t buy an Elektron device on launch.
Analog Heat +FX I saw so much potential in, but two and a half years later we are still on 1.02 (and it’s quite noisy).
DT2 and DN2 had so many bugs, and I still find them being unreliable. So much so, that I have postponed performing my liveset on them until I feel more safe (they freeze and bug out on rehearsals).
I have to admit, that I was ready to buy Tonverk on announcement as well, but didn’t since it didn’t have the 4 inputs that I thought it would and that would work with my liveset. But this time I would expect it to be a bit half baked and buggy at least.
It’s an expensive lesson, but I’m sure you will be happy about the Tonverk within a year or two. It really has a lot of potential.

I wish I could send pre-FX.
That’s all for today, good night !

I remembered the perfect vinyl to start my Toneverking with, when it arrives tomorrow - a longtime classic in my family, no less…

Hmm that doesn’t seem great from a file management perspective. That means that you really have to nail all sample names and folders before building sound presets and making music?

I love that part about the Digitakt II: I don’t have to worry about using a sample called REC0001 for a sound preset I make because I can always rename it later.

My first feature that i miss is the Gain Reduction meter that’s on the DN2 and DT2, ok i ca do it by ears but it helps a lot. Would be nice if this will be available in the future.

Hi, i need help. I have now my TV and overall it makes a lot of fun, killer machine.

I’ve started my first learning project by transfer some Ableton Live Racks to the tv. 8 Songs 8 Rack thats all. Now Song 3. “could not load sample Sample memory full” all the time.

I use the subtrack machine 8 Subtraks each 4 MB 10 times = should be 320 MB? Thats the End?

I set all other Tracks in the banks / patterns to Midi. What i dont understand, because i think the fault is on my side.

I’ve double checked all my samples, rate, bits and so one. Round about 4 MB per Subtrack, Everything looks good, nothing special. “Sample Memory full” . I set unused patterns / tracks to midi to make so that don’t use memory. Is there a bug in the background that blocks the memory?

Now i made some little changes (Parameters) . Project save → ok → shut down → restart → Project loaded → then after 2-3 minutes - > “Sample Memory Full don’t load sample xxx” It was saved and then loaded. Do i have a faulty unit?

It’s impossible to say - why not load in the test project, that will give you an indication which you can compare with all others

either that or start from a new project and load in a number of multi sample tracks and see if it behaves okay

i did that. When a project its saved and loaded successfully and afterwards i get the message “Sample mermory full” what can i do? I can do nothing, there is no memory indicator. i use only eg 400 MB (based on calculation)

share the test you do with Elektron or other users here, but make it simple and only using factory content from a new project starting point … this way you can determine if it’s behaving different elsewhere

there’s no way to know how or what you’re doing otherwise whether intended or not

it will be an anecdotal conversation until you document repeatable steps methodically, ideally speaking with Elektron support tbh as they will have a better idea of what else can be checked

i did it. I saved a project successfully and then its loaded successfully and then after 2-3 minutes i’ve got the message sample memory full.

TBH This isn’t even a Technical question as per the spirit of the topic [since moved from Tech Q&A for clarity] , you should contact support, but you will need to provide far more info (minimal repeatable steps using factory content) than you have here.

pretty sure when I was messing around with loading .sfz instruments, I saw a message like “samples missing, search for candidates? [y/n]” so it seems to have some function there. maybe that’s just for multi-player instrument samples tho
