I have no doubt that it will be great box. I think most people are simply upset becasue after all the trust they built for the brand they feel misguided, cheated and taken for granted. Something that isn’t new for huge companies.
The whole launch feels like it’s not thought through at all, and if it is then the reactions/opinions/integrity of the end users aren’t taken into account. Which is even worse.
The product is cool, everything is oke. Like you said, its all about the communication. Its not transparent and we feel bypassed which in its turn makes us annoyed. We aren’t puppets, we are people with love for the products.
Look at the whole forum, its based on the affection we have with the machine and thus with the brand. People feel gutted because that relation has been tempered with and because it doenst seems to go both ways.
i´m beginning to think that the dogma “hardware” is better than software isn´t justify everything…i feel like i would like to believe that a laptop is hardware too. everything i want from a synth or drummachine exists in software, but i would like to use ist as a standalone box.
I know what you’re saying and partly agree, but it’s kind of like saying a knife and fork are soooo useful, you use them every day and they make life much easier/quicker to do tasks…Doesn’t mean they’re ‘worth’ £700+ Or my computer mouse, jeeeezus that thing gets used a ton, must be worth a fortune!
If you’re going to have a tiered structure for OB, I hope that forthcoming premium-level gear (I.e. Things in the AR/A4/OT range, as opposed to the more entry-level Digitakt) always comes with OB-premium.
I can see how reserving OB features for a premium version would help increase your bottom line, particularly on cheaper, entry-level boxes, but honestly this reads as a somewhat cynical. Elektron has always made top-shelf gear, which has commanded high prices. I would rather pay more for a fully-featured, complete box than for an intentionally crippled machine.
It would work to have OB as an entirely separate product. In fact, I had assumed this would have been the case when OB first came out. However, by including the product with its high-end gear, Electron set the expectation that OB would be part of the standard feature-set for gear going forward. Perhaps this all just boils down to optics, but don’t give us a crippled, time-limited demo version in order to sell an upgrade. If you need the revenue, jut make OB a separate product line, and include basic, essential connectivity features (e.g… Sample loading, file management, etc) as basic features of the hardware.
In the end, there’s not much point in thinking about the small commercial elektrons such as the DT- I’ve learned this and predicted the slide to corporatisation; elektron is a very different company now.
The best thing anyone can do is buy an OT, AR, MDUW, MM, A4, or a combo, (or whatever) cause the DT is not worth worrying about.
Don’t waste time on it…leave it to the masses.
I would debate they ‘advertised it like crazy’ - in fact I think Overbridge was one of the things Elektron were quite cagey about in relation to the DT, although I wondered if that was to counter some of the disappointment shown by some of us when the Heat OB compatibility took a while to arrive.
I’m not want to be negative here, its just that Elektron does that all the time. The Heat wasn’t love at first sight but that’s an awesome box. So what I ment is that I hope for instance the Reverb will be deep and fantastic, same as the delay. I am still very interested in the Digitakt and I’ve got my finger on the order button. So let me say it like this… They have to convince me first to pay that amount for a drumsampler.
Edit: I miss a great hardware reverb like the Strymon blue/big sky in my setup. If I can use this as a nice fx box too than I keep my money for a hardware reverb in my wallet. More room for the digitakt… But can you use the digitakt like that (like the OT thru machines)
