Introducing Digitakt II

It’s part of the industrial design of the Elektron boxes, all metal and PCB, not to much plastic or rubber that would dampen any vibrations.

Ah well, now that used prices for DT II have come down, I caved. Plan is to record more stems live so I can print stuff from my Nina that already sounds great with some DAW effects into DT and then build tracks faster.

But right now, I’m on vacation and I just explored it solo for the first time. I never had as much fun with my OG DT, which was always just utalitarian (sample box with Elektron sequencer and no OT clunk) to me but not close to my heart. Have to say with its 16 tracks, many FX, enhanced synth capabilities and lots of new trig conditions and three LFOs, it’s a pretty great groovebox. I’ve only messed with the pre-assigned samples and found them leagues ahead of those on OG. I also had loads of fun with ctrl all in a musical way. And I haven’t even tried to exclude stuff from it, so I think I will really use ctrl all on this machine.

I will also have to consider whether this will now be my main sequencer over ST with its 16 tracks, 128 steps and advanced conditions. If only it could send retrigs via MIDI. And I also don’t want to use the new sequencer features too extensively, so I would miss them on all other Elektrons. Have to say it’s not ideal that not all of their machines have the same basic sequencing capabilities with DT II now.

I can also see it becoming a bit messy when using all of the new stuff. It already feels a bit like DT II has outgrown the digi format and would really benefit from a slightly bigger case like OT or the Tonverk prototype. I’d prefer the keyboard knob to not need fct to access its setup, but I know that could be confusing. I can’t forgive Elektron for messing with the track mute button though. I’m sure it will completely mess with my ST muscle memory. Why couldn’t they leave it in the lowest button on the left and put the song button somewhere else or keep it in a menu, which was totally fine imo on OG and ST.

Same here, I never liked the OG Digitakt. The switch of TRK and Keyboard Key is bizarre, but I got quickly used to it. It helps that it feels different due to the different size. I never use Keyboard mode, so it’s not even a Key I ever touch. But I’m working on an album that is completely done with the DTII and I have a blast and it feels perfect. Maybe a fourth LFO would be nice sometimes … one can never have enough of those :stuck_out_tongue:

Meaning you didn’t even sample other machines into it? Loved your review on Amazona btw, hope you’ll write more over there!

Whoops, it’s actually the opposite :stuck_out_tongue: It’s the result of my quest to make DTII sound anti-sampler and anti-machinegun. I’m designing sounds on all my gear as well as gear on loan and sample that into Reaper, in order to make loops (of synth tones with modulation - like wavefolder or fm) or chains (of same sounds but also with variation). For example, I sample one long “note” of a Pulsar-23 hihat, loop that in Reaper, and then on the DTII one LFO is jumping randomly to different positions. And on top of that there are all the sound design options of the DTII itself, such as the awesome new filters. The goal is that everything sounds as alive.

← Litte example, a sequence with glide and the LFO is slowly driving through the loop (of one morphing note), and the loop is a note with increasing and decreasing FM amount. And I also use the filter.

So it’s all my sounds, and on the DTII I’m working with them like someone who just bought a cool sampling CD in the 90s

Here’s a Drum and Bass jam with Digitakt 2 + modular + H90. Digitakt 2 is the conductor of everything, love it so much!

Hello and have a nice day!
Is it possible to sample from a computer into DT II via USB on a Windows system without Overbr?

Thx!

Yeap!
(On Mac but should work on windows as well)

I would go with as few conversions as possible. I bounce my WAVs in Ableton as 48/16 and it sounds 1:1. had some longer pads loaded in with 48/24 and it sounded a little bit off to me.

Asking for a friend who is thinking of purchasing his first Elektron with Digitakt 2.

How is the state of it now? Buggy or smooth as silk?

Any big bugs etc.?

Your friend might have to send it in for repairs if it ends up having a defective display.

It’s smooth stand alone but not when using it with a computer. The transfer app is buggy as hell and crashes all the time. The current firmware also misses some key functions like not being able to record or convert samples to mono.

He´s quiet new to sampling, so i do not think that he will transfer a lot of samples from his computer.

is there anyway to tell if it is defective? like from the looks of it and so on?

Thanks you two!

That’s not happening to me, so I wouldn’t it assume it happens to everyone.

Elektron have said it’s not possible to infer a good/bad screen from serial number etc. I wouldn’t know about any tell-tale looks.

But if he´s buying a used one then it should be pretty clear from pictures if its defect or not. im guessing just asking for pictures with the device on would suffice.

Well, yes, but that’s no guarantee it won’t suddenly happen a week or two after purchase.

I’m hoping this is overstated…I’ve owned quite a few Elektron machines over the years. All were/are flawless with zero issues. That leads me to believe their QC is pretty great, but I’ve yet to purchase a DT2, so maybe they are an odd exception? Or again, maybe the issues are rare and overstated?

It’s not a QC issue. It’s a bad batch of screens that start going bust after a month or two. It’s really unfortunate for elektron and end users of course. But you can send it in and they’ll replace the screen.

If he wants to buy used, he should just look for one that has already had the repair done on it. It might not even matter to them if they know it can always be sent in for repair free of charge.
