Introducing Artcore - a new home for electronic music

Cheers, I had been meaning to setup but got busy and distracted. Will upload a few projects.

Thanks! Hah - Time to invent your own genre !
Post a track here and maybe someone else can suggest… We’ve just added Leftfield - it’s seems to be a good one for way out tracks that don’t quite fit anything else…

Great stuff!

This site is really impressive congratulations @orbita I hope it booms.

Left field is where my pop music would go. I am bad at defining my music. Dislocated ambient perhaps. Im impressed with the site. Well done.

Thanks!

This looks cool. Are there plans for a pay what you want option? Apologies if that has been asked or is obvious somewhere else…

Hi ! Thanks for checking it out and asking. Yes, we definitely are planning a form of pay-what-you-want option.

Cool. Having a look around, liking the look of the ability to set bundle prices, as single tracks are super prevalent in electronic stuff. Effectively allowing someone to create their own EP and to take a discount for that is pretty cool idea.

We don’t actually have that. But it’s a great idea so we can look into it for sure.

Ah yeah, so I slightly mis-read that bit of the site! So I think Bandcamp has a similar feature where you can buy the whole discography of an artist (which you do too). I’ve seen comments from others that they like being able to buy individuals especially if they’re a DJ or similar, and they’re put off buying albums or EPs where they only want 1-2 tracks.

So potentially you coud give folks the chance to incentivise that with an offer. So maybe anything over 3 tracks, you can take a little bit off the total amount. A bit like you already have with discography discount, but you could (say) add 3 tracks to cart and it will give you a discount (if the artist wants that of course.) Eg: buy 1 track = £1, buy 3=£2.50 or similar.

That’s a great idea, thanks. We already have the option for artists & labels to create discount codes to hand out and they can have a minimum spend - like spend Ā£10 and get %20 off and they can add the details to their BIO section but I like the idea of making it a bit more of a profile setting which we can then automatically apply and show it on the user profile. So I’ve added that to our backlog.

What exactly is left field? I see it around but I don’t have a frame of reference for what that genre really is.

Just a quick update on some Artcore news and improvements.

We were featured in Sound on Sound recently
https://www.soundonsound.com/news/artcore-independent-music-platform

And I chatted with with the lovely Gaz from Sonic State at SynthFest UK

Improvements

  • Each artist and label page now has it’s own dedicated tracks and releases section which shows their music in a search style filterable list.
  • The search filters have been improved and layout tightened up.
  • You can now pay by Creditcard or debit card without a Paypal account.
  • We’ve added a blog with artist interviews, so if you’ve on the platform and you’d like to be featured, get in touch!.
  • The design has been updated to modernise it a bit more.

I believe it derives from ā€˜out of left field’ meaning unexpected or out of the norm. It’s probably a baseball term. Popular usage in music tends toward obscure or esoteric music.

Cool, thanks!

I’m no expert here but I think Leftfield can be used in different contexts with music. It can be used a sub-genre - as in Leftfield Techno or Leftfield House - Techo/House that is out of the ordinary.

It’s also used as parent genre to genres that are a bit less mainstream as we have used it here (and we’ve seen it used like this elsewhere)

It can also be used as a genre in it’s own right for when your music just doesn’t seem to quite fit into anything else.

Definitely one to check out when you’re looking for something different.

I’ll definitely do some browsing in the genre, that does sound very interesting to me.

Hey @orbita
This is some sterling work! Congratulations on all you’ve done so far and I hope it continues to flourish.

Just taking a look around and I noticed some things in genre section at the bottom of the page.

There is no Techno.

I love the fact that I can see Grime. Without going down to much of a rabbit hole I think that it should be it’s own genre, just like Dubstep. Both are derived from UK Garage and although I don’t think UK Garage should be the parent to Dubstep and Grime on your site I think that Grime and UK Garage should have its own genre with no parent. I would add Drill, too.

I think it would be wise to keep a slight eye on genres and when new ones emerge. I used to make a lot of 140bpm Grimey kinda Garage but I could never select it as a genre when I uploaded anything. It was frustrating. As time went on Drill seemed to emerge and brought a different vibe than Grime. Whether or not I like them or not is beside the point I am making. Taking Drill for example. A lot of the guys that make Drill nowadays would definitely be independent so your site would appeal. They would want to be known as a Drill artist. But they may feel somewhat blocked or unaccepted if they can’t select the Genre that they are creating. They would have to select Grime (which in your case is under Electronica for I don’t know what reason) which is completely different to them thus alienating them. So keeping an eye on what is going on genre wise would be good for those people that are creating that specific art form. Sorry for babbling lol my overall point is that if you do add genres as they emerge I think you would appeal to more artists and generate more of a buzz on your website.

I think I signed up when you first put your name out there. If I didn’t then I definitely will be now. Excellent work! I’m looking forward to hearing some of your Techno bangers that you briefly mentioned! I hope you’ll have time to follow your music making dreams as well enabling other artists to follow there’s.

Edit: I thought Grime was under Electronica but I was wrong; it’s just greyed out. Why are some genres grey?

I just sat down for a few hours to make my profile and upload the last ~4 years of my releases. It was pretty painless for the most part, and it looks great. If I had a more serious profile picture I might even look professional. Very slick that you took my socials and integrated them into my profile automatically, I like that very much.

I don’t know enough about genres to say what’s good or what’s missing in that regard. I’m not even sure I categorized myself or my music correctly. I’ll share it around and see how other people feel about it. This looks great for netlabels and such, I certainly would have been interested in something like this when I was more actively involved in a netlabel. For us, it was bandcamp, soundcloud when we could afford pro (because with the size of our releases we blew through the free tier in 2-3 albums).

Trying the listening now, looking at the playback quality and such. Only thing glaring out at me is I touched the pitch fader and I can’t quite get it back to my track’s original BPM. So, I think a good move might be to add a double click on the fader would reset it to original value, like in a lot of VSTs. That’s my only feature request as of tonight.
