Interesting modulation effects

Wondering what is recommended as “interesting” and “unusual” in a world of Choruses / Flangers / Ring Mods etc… ? Lookin with an idea to use on drum machines as well as of course guitars and all the things.

Format not too important- pedals / racks / software. But pedals preferred.

Discovered Walrus Polychrome and Juliana and those are very nice on guitar and synths. Also Boss CE-2w is surprisingly great on drums.

EHX and Moog ring mods are very nice on percussion, use it very often. A bit sad that I sold EHX (older one) last year to a guy in Australia and they lost it in transit : (

Anything like Bode Freq Shifter in pedal format with lfos? : )

Anything you love :two_hearts: and can recommend?
Please share!

Check out the triad/byome by unfiltered audio. Kind of a multiband vst zoia.
Pedal form empress zoia ofc.
I wish kemper would build a 19" rack fx unit.
The profilers fx sound so good.
If you are also into guitar it is worth it!

Yeah, want Kemper since a long time. Will get at some point!

But at the moment the main idea is to experiment with IND outs of a drum machine to shape sound a bit a in a more “analog” / “nasty” way. Besides all the stuff I have, a strange chorus would be interesting to try, not a “norm” one which just add some lushness, but something more weird with different waveforms to choose, deep depth, maybe lag control and anything I just can’t imagine yet

Checked Unfiltered audio plugs, actually very impressive! On a pricy side (about 200 -300$ for a plug )…

Liked their Silo a lot, maybe get a demo to play with… funny they have an example of TR606 CLAP processed with Silo. Maybe miss something on my 606 and there’s actually a clap hidden inside?! Need to open it up)

Thnx 4 da tip)

Maybe a rack full of Kempers ?
Yeah but the FX cannot be modulated to such an extend you need.
Imo it is only worth it if you really play and record guitar too.
You always can slap midi lfos on. It has very good midi implementation!
Yeah would be really nice to have a cheaper Kemper FX unit, I think it would sell very good.

Plugin alliance is pricey, but they have sales sometimes, I got it for like 60€ or something.
200-300 would have also been to much for me .

This was very interesting, unique and kinda cult I’d say - probably tricky to get one but by far the most appealing modulations box I’ve known - it’s not really a straight modulation unit … I was just staring at it (un-racked) as this topic popped up pondering hooking it up

You might look at the Mod Duo X or Mod Dwarf. For instance, you can take a phaser plugin like this one, and then add virtual CV controls to every control, based on an LFO, an envelope follower on incoming audio, midi, etc.

Actually very cool! I remember some time ago they were laying around and nobody wanted them… wouldn’t mind to get 1. Also love looping, and especially this type of “micro looping” kind of technique Andre demonstrates.

The Red Panda Raster 2 is a delay… but you can use it in a lot of none-delay type applications (delay can be set to 0 ms for no delay or in <30 ms ranges for modulation effects), from chorus and flangers to frequency shifting and all sorts of weird stuff. There are a lot of ways to manipulate the stereo image as well.

Ogh thanks! Very nice suggestion! Haven’t checked yet what Raster can do, but I luv and use A LOT their Tensor and Particle pedals so definitely will love the interface and sound of Raster. Gonna see what it can do.

Actually best modulations I’ve programed come from special delays like Eventide racks, old analog delay racks etc…

I think you would like the intro they wrote for Raster 2 which is (paraphrasing) “We wanted a delay that could do all the old digital rack delay tricks”

Haha, yes! : )

I think the most interesting thing you can do is heavily modulate these sorts of effects, either with midi cc LFO’s or control voltage. There was a brief moment where I had a space echo, which isn’t technically a modulation effect, and it sounded amazing, but I vastly preferred my VST delays and Ableton fx for their flexibility and sound design uses.

Shaperbox is pretty good.
I think in general a big advantage of plugins over any hardware device that I’m aware of is the ability to apply fx to specific band of frequencies over multiple times / lfo/ Bpm… no hardware sampler or synth has gone near this type of internal real-time processing.

The Syntax Error 2 from Alexander pedals might be up your alley. It has a glitchy mode (Stretch), a frequency shifter, and your normal ring mod/chorus/flange, plus is stereo in-out with midi expression. Also a 4-step sequencer, so you can kinda fake an LFO

Ogh very cool| !Haven’t heard about it before…
here’s some drums with older SYXE…

2nd revision should be more wild in every way…

Cool! And it’s only 99$
Will get a trial and see

Great idea for a thread! I’ve been thinking about doing the same thing to spice up my old Alesis HR-16, but I’m totally new to pedals so I’ll definitely be scoping the recommendations here.

Have you looked into anything from Meris? Polymoon looks sweet, seems like it can flange and phase pretty well

Hedra might be worth a look too?

They are unique of course, but I think they work best on guitar / leads /pads / - more tonal material, otherwise it gets too chaotic with pitch voices etc…

Great idea about HR16… I still have circuit bended version somewhere here… luv it

Old Blood Noise Endeavors - Dweller Phase Repeater
Old Blood Noise Endeavors - Visitor Parallel Multi-Modulator
Demedash Effects - T60 Analog Modulator

All 3 are excellent on drum machines, synths and guitars.
