Inputting 12/8 over 4 bars quickly

How do I make a one bar 12/8 pattern (12/16 34x) a 4 bar 12/8 pattern? Quickly? Without having to input all 48 steps?

Inputting a 4 bar 4/4 idea is easy when you just do one bar and then extend the pattern length to 4:4.

How do you do it for 12/8? Do I really have to input every single 48 note step for full 4 bars of 12/8?

What do I do if I’m doing a live set and wish to create a 4 bar 12/8 pattern?

Thanks in advance

a better drum programmer than i will have a better answer than i do at the moment, but couldnt Scale mode be a thing here? Im think of Art Blakey and all those guys throwing that 12/8 over 4/4 feel in their drumming… If you split it into 2/3 scale and everything is more broken into triplets, could you program it in that scale and keep your 4/4 bar length and easy copy pasting?

i dont suppose that would do it though, now that im thinking about it…
well, heres hoping someone with more experience can chime in, as im interested to hear what folks have to say on this. id also love to hear your 12/8 pattern!

If you want 1 bar of 12/8 = 1 page of elektron sequencer (which is what I’m inferring from what you said) then maybe do it by treating a group of 4 elektron trigs as 3 1/8 notes, then use microtiming to adjust the timing of steps 2 and 3 in each group, and never use step 4. Then you can easily copy that group of 4 trigs with their timings to steps 5-8, 9-12, and 13-16.

That way, when you move from 1 page to more, the pattern will be replicated, and you can also use page copy/paste.

If I wanted to use 12/8 I’d have to do it that way, because pages not aligning with bars would do my head in. BUT it may be more faff than inputting all 48 steps manually.

You could Chain four 1-bar patterns.

You do not mention what box you are using, but I suppose that they all have the same scale setup. I am referencing the AR here.

Since each track can have its own scale, i think you need to consider this quote

“This beat pattern might be written as any of the following time-signatures: 12/1, 12/2, 12/4, 12/8, 12/16, and many others.”

This being said, I think if you wish to have a 12/8 scale you can think of this as 12 x 4 and 16 x4 so you will need to to some preparation prior for a live show. I would suggest that the Primary pulse (numerator) be set to 16, enter in your Trigs, then set the scale (Mode ADV.) to 48/48, this will copy page one over to the other pages, add any variations in between the pages.

Now set your Secondary pulse (denominator) to lets say 16. you now have a 48/16. Now at the start of your show you can set the Primary pulse back to 12 using the Function scale and pressing trig 12. When you want to extend it over to 48 you can then press Function / scale and your 48 trigs should remain as you set them, essentially giving you 12 x 4 /16

Since Variation is the goal I would use Retrigs and conditional Trigs as well, or in the place of what i mentioned above.

Could retrig do similar thing I wonder? Set to 1/8 with 2 repeats then copy that mofo all over the shop.
