Band “nerds” went to bandcamp. I don’t care how bad ass some artist may seem, like Trent Reznor for example. He’s bad ass, but a total music nerd who just made revolutionary industrial and worked out. But at heart, just watch him talk about the moog voyager, he plays it cool, but no, he’s a music geek. So I think Bandcamp is like, don’t take yourself so seriously because unlike itunes, you can interact with your artist’s when you purchase like if you saw them at a show and they had a spot afterward for you to meet them and say what’s up. If your good at something your kind of a nerd about it. Like great directors, musicians, etc you better love and know your craft inside and out.

I’m siding with whoever said you can’t please everyone. It is a playful kind of name. Maybe they like the idea of not taking things too seriously?

Also I’m confident the term band camp isnt at all widely known outside of your corner of the world, so the concerns you have will be largely irrelevant to 90%+ of the global market anyway

to band concentration camp?

Just because the idea has been imported from the US in recent years does not mean it is widely known or ingrained in people’s minds here.

Stop telling people they are wrong when they tell you it’s not part of their culture the same way it is in America.

Plus look at the bloody video, it’s called Music Camp, so even though the concept exists here, it’s not called “band camp”.

You don’t like the name and other people don’t have a problem with it. That’s ok.

To give OP some support, I actually feel the same. I don’t really come from an underground music background like maybe more of you do. And to me it also really sounds like 1990s Facebook for kids with a high school band or something.

I’m overexaggerating of course, but I’m not getting it in my system to regularly check it as a consumer, as opposed to SoundCloud or Spotify. And that’s a recurring subject here right, that most people here would prefer the listening audience to be on BandCamp instead of Spotify? For that to happen, perhaps the name/vibe of the name doés come into account…

Anyone else getting the feeling the OP is waiting to launch some sort of international network of band camps and is trying to get Bandcamp to change their name so they can have their URL?

Ha! Did I just get recruited by BandCorp??

In French, “camp” can be indeed a scout thing, but the major sense would be “side”.
Bandside doesn’t sound the same, but I do believe it’s the heart of BC project, and it was actually something that BC support told me recently.

If that’s not the reason, we have to accept that we’re sat here debating whether or not Bandcamp is a “good” brand name and, if that’s the case, Bill Hicks died for nothing.

This is one of the sillier threads I’ve read on this forum.

I know. it’s cracking me up how much discussion this has prompted… here I am reading though!

Like the name of any service/startup/project, the name alone doesn’t really matter, but more so the whole brand. I think Bandcamp has an awesome, simple, recognizable brand that has grown and adapted with stability. In a recent example, Bandcamp Friday’s appears to be making at least somewhat of a positive impact on musicians and I imagine Bandcamp as well. For extra brownie points, they also feel like the least unethical of streaming services. To me, it seems like they’ve got a hold of themselves pretty well. Would be interested to hear the perspective of someone in marketing though!

In contrast, something like SoundCloud just feels less concrete to me.

…to me, camp has a come together and temporarely vibe…
and band…well, the band is, what it’s all about if we think in social bondings…

i love bandcamp…so if u gonna write them, i’ll do, too…

it was a bit funny when they started…but now, after many years, it’s A truu brand that worx and suits perfectly…the last truu record store around the global data corner…

I get it and have a slight distaste for the name.

My reason is that it sounds like it’s for “Bands”. Not everyone making music is in a band.

It’s not that far off from calling it “Guitarcamp”.

The name gives you an expectation of what you’re going to find. In this case, I wouldn’t be thinking: I need some new electronic dance music hmm  ahhh This Bandcamp website probably has loads of great dance tunes!

You don’t go to Beatport and expect to find tons of great blues and rock and roll…

Rumor is that Bandcamp wanted to call themselves Taintpunch but the domain was not available.

I never told anybody they were wrong about anything, I expect a retraction, an apology, and proper quotes from this point on.

chuckles take it easy man

hahaha, I’m sorry man but unfortunately this thread is only about pondering on the name of Bandcamp, not so exciting I know but marketing and music can be somewhat interesting

yeah and like I said in my experience nobody seems to lead with Bandcamp in conversation if it’s not the name then what is it…

lol not out to offend anyone here who uses Bandcamp, I use Bandcamp too
