I closed my ebay account

I had an account since 1999 and a second account since 2001, I closed the older one earlier this year due to the managed payments system, and the terrible seller hub, which did not suit my needs, it was a selling account only. My second account was mainly buying but a bit of selling occasionally, so I left that one open just for buying.

Anyway, I have noticed over the past 5-7 years ebay has got steadily worse both for buying and selling, and with every update they make, things get worse. Creating a listing used to be much quicker, but over the past 5 years it just gets more and more tedious with each update.

In particular search throws up way to many irrelevant results, the dumbing down of the search filters, the poxy ads, and in general it now becomes such a chore trying to find stuff on ebay I end up rage quitting

So yeah, fuck off ebay.

I haven’t used ebay in years either.
I used to buy things on there, and sometimes sell gear.
In the last decade though my avenue for those things are elsewhere.

Yeah, I used to love ebay, did thousands of transactions on there, it was the only game in town for me for a long time, there are plenty of other better platforms for buying and selling now though.

When it was mostly a secondhand marketplace it was great, now it is like Amazon, but slower, more expensive and shitter.

Why closing an account ?
I went like 6 years without buying anything and then bought a cheap shotgun mic.
Durint that period, they did not sent emails or anything like that

The managed payments was the proverbial last straw for me. I also closed my seller account last week which I had used since 2009 and had over 600 transactions and 100% feedback.

I also feel like it has become a shittier Amazon and not ideal for one off sales of second hand goods.

Are you using some other site instead? Is there a good alternative that sucks less?

I have to say that for selling/buying gear is far more pleasant here on this forum! I only started that recently, but only good experiences so far.

Just because I don’t ever want to use it again because I don’t like it anymore, so it seemed pointless having an account and my data on their servers, I requested all my data be deleted too.

Also I think that if you don’t close an account that you are unhappy with these companies don’t get to know you are unsatisfied. Not that I expect ebay to care about an individual account, but if everyone who is dissatisfied does then they might get the hint.

I did the same with my bank recently too, 25 years with them, stuff changed I didn’t like, sayonara.

I just used FB marketplace to sell my MPC One. I only have a FB account to use Marketplace. It’s not ideal because, it’s still FB but I get to keep all the money. I also did some trading on the lines forum. Haven’t used the nauts forum to sell anything…. Yet. I’ve also used reverb in the past.

For my own products there are numerous places I can sell that are better and cheaper than ebay, for any used gear to buy or sell there are forums, gumtree, reverb, etc. without the high fees and all the other bullshit of ebay.

For new gear I buy from online stores directly, you can often get a better deal, Juno, Andertons, Bax, Rubadub, Signal Sounds etc.

I said fuck off to eBay in 2004 or so when they made the change that sellers could no longer leave negative feedback for buyers. I had over 6k in feedback at the point and cancelled my CC which was attached to my eBay account so they couldn’t get the 1.5k in sellers fees I had accrued that month.

eBay was so much fun in the early years. I use to put trade in the titles of certain auctions and everyone paid with Postal Money Orders which I would stash under my bed. It’s kinda weird feeling nostalgic about online type things, just shows you how much things have changed since those early internet dayz…

As the end of 2022 draws closer, I feel like it’s been a year of letting go of things that don’t work for me or cause dissatisfaction. Gear, Cars, tools, my property and SERVICES have all been swept aside. I don’t know when this will stop, as I’m approaching 50 and shifting into cynical grumpy middle age nicely. I have more time for music, less to complain about.

I’m a bit north of 50 now, my tolerance for incompetence is pretty low, life is too short for change for changes sake as seems all too common with services these days, also it feels liberating to dump stuff that wastes my time.

Yeah I’m the old man yelling at cloud I guess, but no stress or time wasting and not paying my money for incompetent crap services.

Is this where we’ve ended up, with online announcements about closing online accounts?!

I actually grew up with ebay when I used to help my, at the time in the early 2000s, computer illiterate pops sell magnifying headpieces people used to/maybe still do wear. Those were the wild west times of ebay imo, back in the 2000s. It’s still there, but I agree that the atmosphere is not what it used to be. Could be that your items just aren’t in demand at the moment, too.

Yeah eBay is so shit.

I wish I could avoid PayPal too.

I think when things get too big they just go bad. Same for dating apps.

I can’t believe eBay DEMAND my bank account details to continue using them, when PayPal always had it. So yeh, fuck off. And now Reverb too, so likewise, get a duck up ya. Considering that one of Australia’s top two telcos just had its customers details hacked including bank details for those on direct debit, I think it’s a good day to delete eBay, Reverb and PayPal (just left Optus this morning). Going to use Visa’s money from now on and let them take the loss for any data breaches.

EBay sucks.
Gumtree is ok here.
Honestly though, for buying and selling synth stuff, specialist FB groups are brilliant. Nothing but good experiences on both sides. No bullshit.
I had a bunch of stuff listed here and on FB Aussie wigglers group (dumb name) every single item sold on the FB group, very quickly too I might add. It’s the sole reason I still have a FB account.
