After playing my first live set with a hybrid synth setup consisting of the Digitone, the Digitakt, the Mother-32 and Ableton Live I made a breakdown on how everything is connected and what each device is doing. I wanted to share this as it might give you ideas on how to set up the Digis together with Ableton or other DAWs. As I’m just making the switch to a hybrid setup I’m curious to hear what your workflows are? Are you completely DAWless or also using Elektron boxes with a DAW?
Great to see that you’ve made the transition to a hybrid setup! I’ve been jumping between hybrid and dawless setups for too long… My problem with using computers in my setup has mostly been about bad MIDI timing and sync, but I find that things are better nowadays with for example Expert Sleepers products and Overbridge.
Hey ZX81, Can understand that very well. As much as I love the setup now: getting everything perfectly in sync has been quite painful I have to say. But it was well worth it
Just signed up at Patreon. Your templates were what I needed to move into hybrid territory as dawless wasn’t working for me. I see Digitakt is not that much used besides adding some hands on controls to Ableton and doing some fillers. Have you considered using other midi controller for the hands on control at least with faders and/or more knobs? Something like Faderfox PC12/MX12 or EC4/UC4.
Thank you so much @Bourn! The support really means a lot and it is awesome to hear that the templates are useful for you, big thanks for the feedback.
Regarding your question: In the meantime since I shot this video I moved on and further refined the setup and removed the Digitakt from it. Like you said it wasn’t used that much and I moved a lot of the global controls (controlling send fx, track volumes, etc) to the Ableton Push 2. This makes more sense and is one device less to take care of. I recently uploaded a new Ableton Template to Patreon (Liveset GDS.FM) where you can see that the Digitakt is no longer part and therefore there are new controls on the master channel to control send FX in Ableton.
Yeah just checked. I was still exploring the DN/DT template. This new template seems even better. I can just select master track and have all fillers/filters there that Digitakt performed before. Now I can sell the Digitakt + Push 2 for a Push 3 which will add better workflow in session with the Split View from screen/pads.
Exactly, that was the main idea behind that! Really cool to hear that it works for you. And yeah, the Push 3 definitely is on my list too, mainly to make the setup even more versatile. Having an internal audio interface is so handy for playing live. And sometimes when you can’t bring that much gear, all of my sets can easily be pre-recorded and then performed just using the Push 3 standalone.
Diving deeper into hybrid setups, I just released a new video which is a deep dive on the connections of my setup and how I set up the Digitone to work with Ableton. I go over Overbridge, MIDI and audio setup too. Maybe it gives some of the people here on the forum some ideas for your own setup!
I made a video discussing the pros and cons of a hybrid music production setup and hope this video is helpful for you. Especially if you consider a hybrid setup or thinking about re-structuring your music making setup in general.
