How's your stress level today?

Thanks a lot. I have never heard of the ladder of inference. I’m at work now but I’ll have to take a closer look later. Thanks again.

Hi! I battle stress (with various success) using these three main tools, super personal and no universal truth at all:

  1. Creating offline weeks every now and then. Staying offline for a week - mostly from a Sunday to a Sunday. Only checking emails once per night.

  2. Zazen - zen meditation - 14 minutes a day is enough.

  3. Biking - Lucas Brunelle style

That’s just me.

Yeah, I’ve looked into dopamine detox, I’m not sure I’m convinced by the reasoning behind it as the “science” seems a bit on the pseudo side. Dome recommend to stop any pleasurable activity, such as eating something you like or playing video games, and that for a few days.

However, I can totally conceive that in the long run, totally removing any ounce of boredom and mind wandering from our lives with all the distractions and hobbies we have nowadays, must have a much bigger toll on our well being than we’d like to admit.

Edit: not trying to discredit any good this method must have provided to your patient! It’s great that it worked.

Lol

Have some sympathy for this woman: She needs to deal with this 100 times a day and she is probably completely fed up with all excuses she needs to hear over and over again.

Take responsibility for yourself and others: wear a mask which fits, don’t eat chewing gum while wearing one and start thinking about how others feel instead of yourself only.

When you start doing this on a regular basis your stresslevel will dissapear before you know it. (and you will feel better about yourself too).

My stress levels are through the roof. I hardly slept at all last night. We’re supposed to have our first in-store gig in a week and as the pandemic situation is getting worse we’re on the verge of canceling the show. It’s a local artist but at the same time a big name, a bit like the Leonard Cohen of Finland.

I really wouldn’t like to cancel the show but I also really really wouldn’t like to arrange a big corona-spreading event. Obligatory masks and the finnish ”corona passport” would make it possible and a little safer but still it feels too risky. The band and the artist are okay with whatever I decide, but it’s tearing me apart.

When it comes to the OP, I’ve been harrassed and threatened with violence for asking for my customers to wear masks (which I even provide for free at the entrance). This pandemic is really driving a wedge between those that take it somewhat seriously and those that claim that it’s ”just another flu”.

Dopamine is linked to fatigue. Too much and you get burnt out(stressed out). Tibetan Monks tapped into this creating boredom deliberately so that the brain can adjust itself. i dont know how it works it just does. But it has to be adhered to so video games would create a rush of Dopamine which breaks the cycle. Yes many patients recovered much quicker doing this method.

If you want to be less stressed don’t take things so personally. Try to be compassionate and considerate of others even if they aren’t of you.

There’s a million reasons the cashier could’ve come across as rude to you, she’s likely dealing with her own stress and not acting in malice or trying to cause you harm.

Do you want to feel enraged all day?
If not, then when you notice that you’re thinking angry thoughts and feeling angry sensations in your body, ask yourself if anything useful will come from this or if you’d prefer to move on with your day. You can change your thoughts instantly and the sensations will dissipate after a few minutes.
It’s impossible to stay angry unless you keep feeding the fire with thoughts.

Current stress level = 0

What I mean is that the idea behind a “dopamine detox” comes from a good place, however it is also a modern self help movement with a catchy name based on not so scientifically correct understandings of how dopamine works and can lead to counterproductive decisions. Removing yourself from any source of pleasure does not do any good to your brain. So I prefer to say that I need to unplug and let my mind wander.

Maybe that ‘wedge’ has always been there. It just hadnt been released. Interesting.

Its actually been practiced for over 100 years. Its only just become topical again.

Exactly, but the name is new and if misunderstood can lead to bad practices. Dopamine is not a “toxic” hormone.

Edit: kinda debating over semantics here, off topic, my bad (gonna be stressed about this all day)

No its as you say a neurotransmitter which is pefectly normal(fight or flight). We need it to survive in dangerous situations.

Sounds similar to zen meditation, which I was practicing with some local monks from time to time before the pandemic started up. I’ve been meaning to start again, although probably on my own for the foreseeable future.

I think there is something to doing nothing.

Stress is a demon.

It makes you think that everything around you is making you angry.

It isn’t.

Your brain is making you angry.

Figure out why and deal with it, because 1. It’s not everyone else’s problem to deal with and 2. They’re not going to fix it for you anyway.

I have troubles with people saying stuff like “if you don’t live life like I do, you don’t live life at all”

Couldn’t agree more…

Do some hard physical work, something that makes you tired and uncomfortable.

Low - steps I took…

Got out into the countryside, big walks, bike rides. Stopped watching TV, stopped watching the news, stopped letting the MSM control my stress levels.

Its been so nice for the last number of months in the UK with people acting normally, no masks, smiles… thats helped!

Yeah stop watching the “news” is a good one, once you lose the FOMO you realise you wasn’t missing out on anything at all.
