How to Create Sample Folders

Just got my new DT. I see a lot of people talking about how to organize their samples, but I can’t find anything on how to actually create folders. Any tips?

Welcome to the forum

Personally, I would use a computer and the free to download Elektron Transfer app to manage samples. Once connected via USB, you can view the entire collection of samples, create new folders and move them about at will. You can even organise your samples into folders on your desktop, then just drag and drop them into Transfer. Doing it on the DT itself is a pain in the ass! There’s a useful manual for Transfer too.

Edit: be careful about moving samples around once they’re used in your projects because the link to them could get broken and you’ll have to reassign them. I would leave them in your original folders and only add samples as needed for future projects and only delete ones you know are definitely not used anywhere.

Edit of the edit: ignore my original edit. The correct information is given below

I thought samples were referenced by a checksum and not name/location?

That’s what I thought too and couldn’t find the reference in the manual… But I still believe so.

You are probably right. I know it’s definitely true for Model:Samples. So I was erring on the side of caution for OP. Let me see if the definitive answer is in the manual.

Edit: I don’t find any mention of it in the DT manual. I skimmed though and did a search for ‘checksum’ and ‘check sum’. @eangman, could you confirm the above about moving samples on the DT, please? Do they individually get a checksum number like on the M:S, and could this info be added to the DT manual if so? Thanks!

From the Digitakt manual:

“A sample that is used in a Sound or a pattern can be renamed or moved and still work as intended. This is due to a hash function that adds a file specific value to every file, and this value is independent of the file name or the file’s location in the data structure. However, if you delete a sample, it will not be included in any Sounds or patterns anymore.”

Aha, perfect. Thanks for confirming! :slightly_smiling_face:

Does this apply to the OT also?

I actually don’t see how to move things around using Transfer. Am I missing something? I’m looking to move folders from their respective transfer-*folders to the root folder. I don’t see any functionality to move samples! Would love any help you could offer…I feel a bit stupid about it!

Hit Explore near the top right. You can then see the whole file structure on the device. You can add folders, transfer them to your computer, etc. Is that what you’re looking for?

P7 and 8 of the Transfer manual has lots of useful information about what you can do

Ah, my bad. I thought I could use it to move folders around on the Digitakt. I guess I could move them to the computer, then back. that might work. But there is no cut / paste or move right in Transfer that I can see.

You can move samples on the Digitakt itself but not folders afaik. Buuuuut, what you could do is create a folder (called a directory on DT) in the right place, select all the samples in the folder you want to move, then move the samples to the new folder. Check p61 of the DT manual

I will read it again, thank you!

hi guys,

I was looking to organize my samples on the digitakt but I am unsure how to do this. I was able to create a new sample folder on the unit itself, and “select for move” a group of samples in different folders. I would like to paste them in the folder but I cannot seem to figure out how to do it. Please if anyone has experience with this let me know!

I have been considering resetting my Digi to add samples in a more organized fashion but I really do not want to have to do that.

I’m like 90 percent sure you were half way there. After you chose select for move, I think you just need to go to the destination folder, press right, and select move here

yeah for some reason thats not an option for me I hit the right arrow in the folder I want to move the selected samples to and get the options “select all, deselect all, and create dir”

My fault. Click left once you’re in the new folder.

oh wow thank you so much dude. I seriously never even thought to try left I was trying func + random combinations of buttons before clicking left!

I mean, to be fair to you, right makes more sense with the way everything else works.
