Hi everyone. I am a drummer and I want to do my solo performance like this guy in the link. He does jungle, dnb, house tech by playing backing tracks on his elektron and plays along with the drums. I actually dont know if he is using pre made tracks or just uses randomiser. How much effort do I need to do this? My. main instrument will be drums I just want to build up the backing track, evolve it and change little things and maybe change the structure etc. But this should be done with min touch possible to the groovebox as my main instrument is gonna be the drums. Could you please enlight me? Is it hadr to do this? Is it easy to do improvisations with randomiser?

its possible his tracks are programmed on a digitakt (you can see each pad triggering) so its not a backing track / mp3 , its written tracks, baslines using samples,.
he’s also changing them by muting / unmuting tracks… like pads etc,… and has more than one pattern/song
and playing along to that… with some drums coming from the digitakt / whatecer the top box is.
i didnt notice him tweaking the other device below (looked like octatrack)…you can see the vertical red dots flash in sync on the octatrack below the digitakt/syntakt/digitone (whatever he’s written the melodies/pads on)

digitakt and other devices have a % option so it can play tiggers based on a percentage chance. triggers can also have ‘conditional’ trigs, eg you’ll hear the trigger once every two times that the pattern cycles (e.g. 1:2 ) … there are lots of conditions you can set up.

you can also setup a ‘fill’ option, but to get those to trigger, you’d have to hold a button down , not ideal if you are drumming.

so ther are many options to add variety which will happen by itself…

the other device is a drum sampler he uses it only to connect the drum triggers to the sampler. To change the drums sounds.

its possible his electronic drums are triggering samples on digitakt… eg the 1st 4 x trigs/pads on the digitakt are the 4 electronic samples that he’d triggering…which could also be why you can see them light up…and thats supported by ‘real’ cymbals etc

have you tried contacting him for some ideas?

its also possible a lot of the backing is from a big sample being streamed off the compact flash card on the octatrack…

2nd video (below) is digitakt

For those without Instagram :

He certainly make a very small drum kit work.
