How much did you spend on ur education?

i’m in the uk , my education cost me nothing…

i taught myself video game art while at school (age 14 onwards) , on c64 and amiga , got my first job in 1990 and still making games today…

through that period i moved from pixel art (c64,spectrum,amiga,st,megadrive,snes,gameboy etc etc) into 3d , through saturn / ps1 / ps2 / ps3 etc.

the last 8 years ive been in production (schedules and project planning) for ps3 / ps4 / xbox one.

i could probably say that buying computers has been my cost and starting out today would be quite different though i would say that creating your own stuff at home rather than some of the games art courses out there is often more useful .

and , (my own opinion here) i dont like student showreels with motion graphics on them , theyre often just moving/rotation bits of clip art scrolling around…ive seen far too many bad motion graphics showreels.

where could I see good and bad motion graphic showreels , ideally to compare and have something to strive towards, plus avoid some of the obvious pitsfalls …thanks!

Took some 10k € loan to survive the living costs, but nothing else. Finland, a half year exchange period in Milan.

A shame that the future doesn’t look too golden for free education in Finland.

And yeah, If you want to learn filming or such, start right away and do not wait until some program tells you what to do. I mean if you are completely new at filming for example, start making movies with your smart phone camera and read about compositions and visual language and just work. Always work. The only rule is work. If you work things will happen, if you don’t nothing will. =)
