I’ve used a couple approaches. For this one, I started the beats first (Digitakt), brought in the acapellas to Djay Pro which is hooked up to my turntable via DVS and then I beat match the acapella to the beat and see how well they match / fit.

Then I will import the acapella as mono mp3 into Digitakt and trig lock it to one of the tracks and then when I change patterns, I re trigger the part of the acapella so it drops in on time. I like this approach because then I can do everything inside the Digitakt - including using the song mode for structuring the chorus/verse/intro/outtro/bridge as well as muting tracks per section.

It also lets me perform/jam a bit.

Finally - I would like to think that the Digitak’s compressor works when the vocals are in the mix and the entire thing is on one device, but I don’t know :slight_smile:

Getting scratching into the mix is sometime tricky - it would be better to overlay them later using Ableton - but I do like it when all the sounds are on the digitakt because I can perform it anywhere without a DAW/computer. So I will scratch on my dj mixer, record directly into the DT and then add the scratches as samples.

Nice to see a few people taking part now :slightly_smiling_face: and sorry to others if I over complicated it.
I probably won’t even find time myself this time round as something personal popped up shortly after setup so I can hardly complain if others don’t take part, but looking forward to hearing those submissions and hopefully getting back into it with the next one.

Just want to reiterate that these competitions are amazing and are a big part of why I know how to produce at all.
So massive kudos to you for running these, and your skills in beat making are an inspiration.

Hoping to join for the next one.

for the record, I don’t think I’ve ever followed the rules on any one of these battles.

Hip hop and Rules are strange bedfellows.

People will generally find any excuse not to actually put their work out in to the world. sucks to be them I guess

Haha I agree breaking rules is one of the core values of hiphop!

I tend to approach these battles as a way to get out of my comfortzone and actually learn new things instead of having a good time making music the way I usually do. The battles which gave me a hard time taught me the most, so I embrace those.

Ok so ive got four submissions now and another coming my way by the end of the weekend so while not a prolifically large battle in terms of numbers, in terms of quality it’s huge.
I’ll do the post up on Monday so if anyone else wants to get something in by then, that’ll be great .
And if anyone wants to be a bit loose with the rules maybe use different mc’s to the ones listed or anything else, that’s great as long as we have the basic guideline in place everything is welcome.

I was about to do the poll before I nip out for the evening but ive got one beat I’m unable to download so ive PM’d the maker.
