Hip-Hop Beat Battle #33: Voting and Results

I’ll vote when I’ve got back from work later and get myself on the outside of a couple of beers :slightly_smiling_face:

I say a couple…

#1 Track 10 - Sounds like De La Soul sat in with a smoking blues band on a hot summer night
#2 Track 9 - The crickets with “Night is on my mind” very nice. This actually sounds like a forgotten track from the Ummah production era. The ghost of J Dilla is in there
#3 Track 01 - Feels old school and modern at the same time, The drum breakdown towards the end was awesome and had some OT weirdness in there (I dunno if that’s what was used but all the stuttering and reverse parts made gave me the evil Aphex Twin grin)

I hope I have time later this weekend to do a full reaction to everything!

Like I said before, it’s a great feeling to be the one who threw the pebble in the pond and now I get to sit back and listen to the ripples of all this amazing talent and passion. Fuck yeah y’all!

For me it was hard choosing between 1 and 2.

Beat #9 3 points
sound, clarity, production. bass. space. kick. snare. buildup. summer.

Beat #10 2 points
what a groove! bluesy licks. scratching. sound.

Beat #6 1 point
mesmerizing. hypnotizing flipped samples. snare.

After the voting I’ll give feedback to the others.

So so difficult but here’s my votes.

1st Beat 10
I couldn’t decide between this and my now second choice for first place, ask me in an hour and it might be different again.
A really well made and nice sounding track love the guitar parts.
Vocals are great.
Brilliant.

2nd Beat 2
Lovely warm sound, love the percussion and that lofi sound to the vibes.
Vocal suits it perfectly.

3rd Beat 14
Great chop work, a bit of a darker mood than most, a proper head-nodder I really like it.

HM
Could easily be in my top 3 in a different mood day
6 & 7 & 1…….

To be fair every track is an HM.
not one skippable track was found and the bonus intro starts it off nicely…
in fact I wouldn’t mind a zip of the whole thing when the battle’s done.

Hey, sorry, I know this isn’t the right place.

I wanna join these. Do the briefs go out on specific days? I just need to lurk harder maybe. I only seem to catch them when they are ending.

Also I’ve seen a few simultaneous briefs going a few times (or thought I did.) Is this usual? That and never catching the briefs at the right time kept me from starting so far. Definitely a me problem, but I want in on the next one

Now you’ve mentioned it, I’m sure the next host can send you an @ when the next one happens :slightly_smiling_face:

I think that a contributions/mission brief thread, and then a voting thread, can give the impression that there’s 2 briefs simultaneously. I usually find an excuse not to participate but I know what you mean, how it will sometimes seem as though there are contiguous battles as occasionally people are still posting in the challenge thread as the voting thread is opened for business.

It’s not really a you or anyone problem, it’s just the mechanics of the thing. Would be way too cluttered with a bunch of youtube videos and discourse in the first half of a voting thread (in my opinion, not speaking for anyone else).

Yeah this makes sense. I do see a few side challenges that seem fun but I see what you mean now regarding the main briefs.

I’m new to these so don’t think I’m trying to fuss.

But it might be cool to have an (Open), (Voting), (Endless), (Closed) prefix amended to the main posts. Kind of like gear that’s (F/S), (SOLD) etc.

I don’t have a ton of music time but when I can jam, I’d be able to hit a few open challenges at once in a session and likewise hop on threads while voting is active. Likewise, I’d know closed would be a good place to leave some notes / feedback and chit chat.

I’ll stop derailing and join into the existing system  . See yall in the next one.

Bookmark this thread and at the end someone will post a link to the next one!

I want to big up @malus_mons for the theme in this battle. Great to let us choose between De la, Tribe, Blacksheep, etc - I listened to all of them and it took me back to those days when life was simpler, songs were made to make you feel good at a party and on the dancefloor. Tying our tracks to nature was a a great reminder that nature is always musical, we just need to listen!

Each track made me feel a different way and tried to convey the vibe I felt with emojis…

#1: :diving_mask: - took me on a slowmotion scubadive to the reef
#2: :yin_yang: - blended that Trini Gladiator with a laid back keys vibe
#3: :pizza: - yeah I love some extra cheese with my robot and dub
#4: :turtle: - turtle soup got chopped and the 808 fired up the dancefloor
#5: :camera_flash: - flashback to those 93 old days
#6: :cloud_with_lightning_and_rain: - like a dream with a thunderstorm to transition before and after
#7: :house_with_garden: - Nice and minimal. Rappers on stage at a park jam
#8: :ghost: - some children of corn riding in on a synth wave of 80s goodness
#9: :cricket: - day and night cycles. repeats. jazz and qtip eternally there.
#10: :guitar: - de la soul putting in a shift with jazz rock. smooth
#11:  - LOL - Bless the comedians who make beats
#12: :money_with_wings: - One of my favorite De la hooks
#13: :ice_skate: - Slow motion roller skating jam, as heard from the bathroom
#14: :cowboy_hat_face: - Sheriff is in town and he’s mad. Take cover
#15: :ferris_wheel: - Song sounds different depending how high or low you are

Respect and thanks to everyone who created and shared - I keep learning from all of you.

Hey @philroyjenkins - here is what I do. There is a feature on this discourse forum that lets you get notified when [you set the rules].

Here is a screenshot of my settings. Essentially, every time a new topic appears on the “Mission briefs” category on the forum, I get an email (but don’t get emails for each subsequent post in that thread).

I set it once and forgot is was there. I get notified about any mission on the forum now which is fun. Some of my favs are from @aarb420 who often posts bi-weekly.

To set it up:

  1. Log in to your account
  2. goto this page
  3. click the little bell icon in the top right and select what you want - I do “Watching first post”
  4. Sit back and get notified
  5. Cook food - make beats. Repeat

3 points to track 4: so infectious, so dirty. It’s got that energy and magic tho, couldn’t help but think of some early Gucci on this

2 points to track 15: I’ve never really liked the song you grabbed vocals from, but recontextualized as sped up over this beat I like it alot, might change how I feel about the OG track

1 point to track 2: smooooth as hell

Incredibly hard to choose. Seriously well done everyone, all great tracks and all deserving of praise.

1st - Track 9: Everything is so on point. The sound, the swing, the sample choices, the little drops and change ups. Love that scratched kick drum, the bell/high hat thing is spot on 90s vibe.

2nd - Track 5: Bass line is so good. Great jazzy vibe. Sounds properly of the Native tongues golden era. Puts a smile on my face.

3rd -Track 4: Pure fun, great melodies and drums/perc, fat bass. I want to hear Q-Tip just chatting over this!

another fantastic playlist, feels good to be in such a boppin mixtape

1st: Beat 02 - this beat is so dope, i loved the sunshower sample and was hoping someone would do it justice, i’d say this beat delivered. super chill, one of those tunes where the acapella fits so well it feels like an official release. top notch summer music.

2nd: Beat 09 - another wavy tune, i really appreciate the electric piano work in this one. i love the different licks sprinkled throughout. another top notch summer jam.

3rd: Beat 15 - love the quasimoto vibes, the beat is wonky and super fun. i love the whole atmosphere of this track, feels like another official release.

ill write up the rest when the votes come in! great work all around friends, yall did it again

Tough to pick 3 out of all that but I’ve tried with my votes below … great work everyone!

3 points for #9 - beautiful production, everything feels very glued together and the use of the vocal and bird samples throughout really catches the ear.

2 points for #3 - great rhythmic use of the crow sounds; love the dirty kick and bass tones and the overall dark, trippy vibe of this one.

1 points for #10 - really strong groove throughout, love the way it subtly evolves throughout and the flow of the verses fits perfectly.

Was hard to choose 2 and 3 but I love the 10. I knew it will be the first pick when I listen it the first time !

1 Beat 1. I like how cohesive this one sounds. I like the little breaks with the pitched drums. I think it’s pretty great.
2 Beat 9. This one almost sounded like an Eric Sermon take on it. I think it’s the bass line. I liked it a lot.
3 Beat 2. The filtering on this is especially good. You switch back and forth between the keys and the horns really seemlessly. The whole flip seems simpler than it is because of how well it’s done.

Honorable mention. Beat 7. It’s just a good remix. Beat 4. I like how all over the place it felt while still being really cohesive.

Ok ok ok voting time:

First Place: Beat 5. This one just sounds right. Go listen to Can I Kick It? or The Choice Is Yours and then listen to this track. It has the sound down to a point. A catchy lil bass loop, bangin drums, and some fun little sample chops to decorate things. Great job to whoever made this!

Second Place: Beat 9. I really dig the laid back vibe of this one and how you incorporated the animal sounds and acapella snippets. I imagine sipping a drink and head-nodding to this in a jazz club or something similar. It was a close call between this and beat 5 for first place, so good job!

Third Place: Beat 1. I appreciate the production side of this one a lot. You clearly went to a lot of effort to get the lofi sound you wanted. This is a beat I would definitely add to a playlist. You managed to add enough variation to keep things engaging throughout the almost 3min runtime without adding an acapella.

Honorable mentions:
Beat 2 - Great vibe
Beat 4 - Love how creative you were, and I enjoyed the 808s
Beat 8 - I mean this as a compliment when I say your beat sounded like video game music, especially the synths.
Beat 11 - My brain is vaguely telling me that those drum sounds are from a specific drumkit in Garageband/Logic but I can’t remember for sure. Lmk if I’m right

First Place: Beat 12 - just love the dusty sound, true 90’s sound. Reminds me sitting in the bus on my way to school listening to mixtapes on my walkman
Second Place: Beat 9 - awesome production, end of summer vibes (I think I know who produced this… you need to give me a tutorial on how to get that phat yet clean sound)
Third Place: Beat 2 - completes the trio of authentic 90’s sounding beats. Also a very nice late summer vibe.

I am really happy to have found these beat battles since I am pretty alone with my love for Hip Hop and beat making! Especially because this forum has such a positive and constructive culture and people really take time listening and commenting. Thank you all.
