Help : Trig mute, Accent, Swing + Slide Keys (AR)

Got my Rytm just under a week ago and I feel like I’ve got the basic gist of the machine - the possibilities are endless, and it’s going to take a lot more practice for me to master it.
The only thing that I am still finding difficult to get my head around is the use of the Trig mute, Accent, Swing and Slide keys; when in grid recording mode, placing an accent on a trig changes the drum pattern and even the kit entirely sometimes, playing presets. Having watched most of Cuckoo’s Youtube tutorials and sifting through other alternative manuals online, it seems to me like there isn’t much info on it anywhere.

So, in short, does anyone have any tips/resources/walkthroughs/how to’s when it comes to sequencing anomalies using these trigs?

Placing a mere accent should not have anywhere near such a dramatic effect on the machine.

Are you hooked up MIDI-wise to a DAW? Im not sure but maybe an accent trig sends a MIDI message?

When this happens I’m not hooked up to my DAW and I haven’t had a chance to sync the AR MIDI to up to Logic yet either, so I’m not sure!

Then I have no idea.

Wait. When the kit and pattern changed, are you sure it wasn’t a slide you placed? Slides affect EVERY parameter that’s different from one trig to the next; one cannot specify which parameter they want slid. So, if you’re placing slides on a factory presets, two trigs might have been setup vastly different from one another using a number of plocks. Thus, the track seemingly going haywire.

Hmm yeah I’m sure that it’s the accent key I’m using, I reckon its just that there are lots of parameters saved with the preset kits, so when I try to change something of my own it interacts with those preset parameters and messes with it.

I’m finding this so incredibly frustrating! I feel like there’s a huge learning curve that i’m yet to cross thats stopping me from accessing all the machine’s functions!

There is. But don’t worry. With time it’ll come.

Suggestion: forego learning on the factory patterns/kits and start making you’re own. That way you’ll know all the ins and outs of your patterns/kits/sounds ect.

Yeah I think that’s going to be my plan of action from now on. How would you load a blank kit? As in one which won’t revert to the factory patterns when an accent trig is pressed haha!

There isn’t a blank kit in the box; you’ll have to make one. A new pattern is loaded with a pretty vanilla kit (just vanilla sounds, no plocks and samples or anything “special”). There was a sysex in the files section with a blank kit but I’m not sure it’s there now with the board change.

And as far as kit/pattern changing on a new pattern with an accent trig: if that happens, contact support asap. :anguished:

cYes, pressing function + bank b/f (keyboard shortcut for accent trig mode) should not change anything at all - you sure you didn’t accidentally switch the pattern instead of opening accent trig mode?

if you feel the factory content is adding extra complexity to your studies, I suggest you start a new project. press function + track and select “load project” then scroll down to the first empty project slot and press yes

Oh. Duh. That too. /face palm (on my part)

Occam’s Razor for you, ladies and gents.

Ah right then that’s probably what I was doing wrong! That seems to work fine now. I have to say the manual is pretty awful at explaining a lot of the features :frowning: Are there any unofficial manuals you guys would recommend?

Thanks for that though will give it a go

I think they’re pretty accurate if succinct, if you can actually pinpoint a legitimate ambiguity (that’s not merely your misunderstanding) in the manual you are doing well, my hunch is you’re just running a bit fast before walking, take your time :okej:

load a blank kit or clear a kit or clear the subpages of a kit or any settings page to get back to a vanilla state - some things will have their designated default values, you can save a blank starter kit with your own

then just go through step by step slowly getting a feel for how each aspect works and don’t try to do anything precious until you are fairly comfy with the overall structure - i’m talking about kits/patterns/sounds, learn by making mistakes now, try a bit of everything until you know what’s roughly happening

everything is streamlined when you know your way around, then it’s just memory and muscle memory for doing your thing

Thanks for the advice  I 100% agree with you about running before I can walk!
