I’m currently having an issue with my Elektron Syntakt and Ableton Live when trying to record the MIDI channels from the Syntakt’s internal sequencer.
What works:
I can successfully send MIDI from Ableton Live to the Syntakt, and it plays back on the Syntakt just fine.
I’m able to record audio from the Syntakt via Overbridge into Ableton, with each track’s audio coming through its own separate channel.
What doesn’t work:
I’m unable to record the MIDI that’s being sequenced on the Elektron Syntakt into Ableton. My goal is to capture the MIDI notes from the Syntakt’s sequencer as separate MIDI clips in Ableton Live.
Even though I can hear the audio and control the Syntakt via MIDI from Ableton, I can’t seem to get the MIDI notes from the internal sequencer into Ableton.
My setup:
Elektron Syntakt connected via USB (using Overbridge mode).
Ableton Live is set up to receive audio and MIDI via Overbridge. Audio recording works fine.
In the MIDI settings of the Syntakt, I have each track assigned to its own MIDI channel, and I’ve tried switching between Track Ch and Auto Ch without success.
What I’ve tried:
I’ve set up MIDI tracks in Ableton Live with the correct MIDI From settings (each MIDI channel corresponding to each Syntakt track), but the MIDI data from the sequencer is not being recorded.
I’ve checked TRIG KEY DEST and Output Ch settings on the Syntakt to ensure MIDI is set to be transmitted externally.
I’ve experimented with USB MIDI mode as well, but I still cannot capture the sequenced MIDI data from the Syntakt into Ableton.
What I’m looking for:
I’m hoping to find a solution where I can record the MIDI sequences being played by the Syntakt’s internal sequencer into Ableton as MIDI clips for further editing or processing. Any suggestions or advice would be greatly appreciated!
You need to copy the trigs and automation from your audio tracks into midi tracks or it won’t send midi. That’s why it won’t record the sequencer midi notes in your daw, because no midi is being sent.
you have not understood what I mean, I WANT TO RECORD THE MIDI THAT GENERATES THE SYNTAKT, in ableton midi clips, so I can do whatever I want with that midi.
I think they did understand. This is actually the simplest way to do what you are asking.
The Syntakt does not output MIDI on sound tracks. So because you can hear audio from the Syntakt, it necessarily means those tracks are not going to send MIDI to Ableton. You don’t have to make new tracks, though. You can change the “Machine” on whichever tracks to MIDI and then record the MIDI notes in Ableton. You will not be able to hear the output from those tracks at the same time, but when you are done, you can switch them back to whichever sound they previously were, without losing any data (I believe)
ok now I understand, thank you very much, I thought it would be like in ableton that the tracks had midi and sound at the same time and therefore I could record the midi, so in all elektron devices the only way to record the sequences they generate is using the machine ‘midi’?
This can be applied to ST and DT2, probably M:C and M:S.
On DT and DN, you have to copy audio track notes to a midi track if you want to send them.
A4 an AR can send midi notes with their audio tracks.
You can’t copy or send notes on OT or MD, doesn’t match. You can use their midi tracks to sequence audio tracks, so that you can send midi at the same time. Don’t know about MnM.
