Headphones DT 770 pro 250 ohm impedance troubleshooting

Heeyyyyyy people, hi

So, I’m planning to get a pair of headphones for my work since I cannot really be loud here where I live. Most my available time is also during the night so I believe this is my best shot instead not doing anything.

I’m interested on these ones but I still can’t figure out if I have what it takes to properly used them since seems you gotta have enough to drive them.

Ideally, I could plug them into my mixer output (Soundcraft Signature 12 mtk) and fly from there, but I have to declare myself ignorant when it comes to Ohm and impedances.

From the internet I’ve gathered this data about my mixer:

Input and Output Levels
Mic Input: +12.5 dBu max
Line Input: >+26 dBu max
Stereo Inputs: >+26 dBu max
Mix Output: +21.5 dBu max
Headphones (@ 150 Ohms): 300 mW

Input & Output Impedance
Mic Input: 1.2 kOhms
Hi-Z Input: 968 kOhms
Line Input: 10 kOhms
Stereo Input: 21.5 kOhms
Outputs: 150 Ohms (balanced), 75 Ohms (unbalanced)

My questions would be:

  • can I actually make this configuration work? Or am I going to have to get an amp for the headphones between them and the mixer. I would also need an adapter due to my unbalanced output (in case of going directly from mixer to headphones), I’m not exactly sure how ilegal that is :joy:

  • any other recommendations? My current audio setup is based on recycled hifi gear from the street, not ideal for sure. A Headphones solution would help me ignore anything about noise, living with a grandma and neighbours

I appreciate any insight about my dilema, and thank you so much in advance. Hopefully this conversation is useful for someone else as well

Pd: I declare myself very ignorant about this, please don’t skin me alive

It’ll probably work. You would just need to crank the volume up. I have DT 1990 Pros and they are also 250ohm and I haven’t really had to consider what the max output is on my devices. Sometimes I just have to put the volume up high.

Only device I’ve ever had issues with impedance was the original OP-1 which could barely drive audio technica M50 headphones.

I’d say just try it out. Beyerdynamic makes great headphones so they are worth getting.

I’m ignorant of Ohms and impedance as well so I Googled this a bit before grabbing a set of DT990’s recently. basically the takeaway I got was “as long as you’re not trying to drive them from your laptop or phone jack, you’re fine.” i.e. if you’re using “proper audio gear” like mixers and sound cards, no worries. I’m using an RME interface with them, and it’s great. with plenty of headroom to spare (not turned up 100%).

your mixer should be fine. worst case, you have to buy a small headphone amp. but I doubt it.

I bought those headphones without really considering the impedance/output issues and only really learned about it after I’d gotten them.

They need to be pretty much at max volume from a phone/mp3 player/laptop, and I’m sure they’d sound a lot better with a headphone amp but I haven’t had any issues from a Mackie mixer or DT.

If you’re not using them for precise sound design or mixing etc. I’m sure you’ll be fine, they’re very comfortable and sound good for just jamming or tracking.

250 ohms is a lot more forgiving than, say, 600 ohms. You’ll probably be fine
