Headphone Recommendations?

Another one hit the dust but this was a weird one. It sounded like I had tracks muted on the Digitakt and things were delayed. So I tried the Digitone and I had the same issue. It was like certain frequencies were just gone not like no more low or highs just certain frequencies the whole mix was all over the place but there was no distortion or something. I started freaking out thinking I broke my Elektrons. Got another pair of headphones and all seems good. Now I was stoned but this was weird af.

Been using the Slate VSX since 3 years, it is by far the best mixing solution I have come across. Translation is phenomenal! I made a video for it. I have no affiliation with Slate, but did some product tours for them years ago. Paid full retail for mine and do not regret it. Slate VSX 3 Review: The Ultimate Solution for Home Studio Mixing?

I just wanted to revisit things topic to send you a big thank you for this recommendation! Finally bought them, half a year ago.

What an upgrade form the Beyer DT 880 (or any other headphone that I’ve used)!
Haven’t heard music like this before. It’s so much more pleasurable to produce/mix music, or just listen to it. Feels more alive.

I realize that I’d underestimated this part of the equation.

oh hell yeah! glad they’re working well

I’m still running my original pair as well and they’re awesome! incredible sound, I did the grill upgrade as well and it’s a must! cost $20 and took 10 minutes to pop the old grills out and swap them, just need a bit of glue/nail polish to put the felt from the original grills onto the new ones.

got mine here, opens up the soundstage a bit more and moves the roll-off from 50hz down to 20-ish, makes them even sweeter >:3

Good to hear!

Wow, didn’t know about that one, and had no idea it could affect the sond! It does sound like an interesting upgrade, looking at the price and all

Only heard about the ear pad upgrade, but some people thought they became way too hot, and I guess it might boost the bass which might reduce transparency

Happy with DT 990 PRO (Limited edition 80 ohm) after a few months. Thanks for advices.
I mainly make music at night in my bed for the moment. Much more comfortable than my old HD 25, very different frequency response. At first I felt like a big lack of medium, compared to HD 25. Got used to it.
May buy a DT 770 PRO for travel / noisy / live situation, unless some users don’t recommend it as a complement?

Hey, I’ve been scanning through the thread for open can experiences. I’m looking for a jamming and mixing pair for when I can’t use the Genelec 8040s, for the sake of preserving my significant other’s and the neighbors’ sanity.

What I picked up in the thread is Shure SRH1840 and Sennheiser 6xx. All expensive but if they ā€˜d provide pristine sound quality it could be viable.

I have Audio Technica M40x closed cans that I love, but the sound pressure on my ears feels damaging in prolonged sessions. I think that should be less with open cans?

Models I had before:

  • Beyer 990 pro: didn’t like the sharp high boost
  • Shure SRH940: very clean but lacking low end, problem for my techno making
  • ATH M50x: beautiful but there s something lacking in the low mid, and the low extension is incredible but too loud for me. M40x is less spectacular but more flat/honest to my ears.

Anyone here sharing my taste? Happy to hear your advice. I don’t want cans that require a separate amp.

I’ve been looking around more and it seems Sonarworks agrees with me

I think I should have a look at the ATH R70x: Audio-Technica ATH-R70x Studio Headphone Review - Sonarworks Blog

Sony MDR7506, a classic for a reason

Massdrop Sennheiser HD6XX, a cheaper but identical model to the HD650. Highly recommended.

Those are closed…

Yes they are like the 40x and 50x

It all depends what you need to do-

Mixing or tracking

If you need to mix you need open headphones

I explained my case a few posts above. Not looking for closed cans.

That s an awesome deal but I’m in the EU…

I am using this combo daily and they are a good pair.
DT-770 for more concentrated work and focused bass and DT-990 for more… well, it’s in the name - opened sound. (I found the higher frequencies and overall sound image from 990 is a bit more natural and also closer to monitors or consumer headphones & speakers. Sometimes I miss high and upper-mid frequency issues in 770, because they are probably too ā€œflatā€)

Thanks. I was using old HD25, they seemed to have lost bass, they are very medium compare to DT 990 PRO. So the difference is huge. Got use to it.
I chose an 80 ohm version for the 990, hesitating between 32 and 80 for a 770…travel, smartphone compatibilty…
I wonder if the 770 is louder than the 990 with the same impedance (80 ohm).
Any advice ?

I found that the high freq boost of the 990 made me mix dull tracks, missing those highs. But I also was way less experienced then. With any monitors or headphones we have to learn to listen to them properly, and use their character, I guess.
