Not a versus ‘which is better’ thread, but instead more of an ‘alternatives’ theme.
I got an MPC Live earlier in the year but have not had the time to dedicate to learning it. I’m then introduced to Koala app and that is enough to satisfy my needs. The MPC will be sold and funds used to get an new iPad. I have a lot of apps I bought over the years so plan to use AUM to connect all.
Plan is to use Koala as a sketchbook and if anything needs more time and finishing then I can jump onto PC.
I was wondering what alternatives to hardware or (computer) software there are in the IOS world.
e.g.
MPC - Koala (also iMPC Pro, Beatmaker) etc
Arturia/NI instrument suites - Korg’s plethora of apps / Moog apps
Eventide Blackhole = Eventide Black Hole app
In particular looking for something to satisfy
Granular Samples
Best 303 emulator app-wise
any sequencer/synth that has elektron style step parameter sequencing or chance?
Troublemaker is fine if you want 303-esque sounds with additional waveforms, but as a classic 303 emulation it very much dissatisfied me so I don’t recommend it at all for that purpose
As far as synth sounds go, I’ve been massively impressed with Yonac’s Trooper. It sounds huge and old (in a great way) but has some very contemporary tricks up its sleeve.
To add on to what others have said:
If you have a hankering for an 0-Coast or more west coast sounds in general try Ripplemaker and Branches.
Other granular options: FRMS from Imaginando is really impressive; so is Spacecraft and works well on a phone; Samplr isn’t just granular but it is essential.
On a more general note: everything Igor Vasiliev does is pretty incredible and with few parallels, either within iOS or elsewhere. His Altispace2 is also my go-to spring reverb.
The trip of GSI tape delays are seriously impressive.
I would echo the mention of Drambo as a sequencer. Cykle and Polybeat are both very interesting options in that dept. too.
If you enjoy Koala there are numerous Mozaic scripts that extend the functionality significantly, introducing round robin, for example.
Rozeta is pretty fun but Riffer is pretty much the best software I’ve ever used in terms of flexibility and actual usability when it comes to random generated patterns, and you can still use it as a basic midi sequencer and ignore all the randomizations if you want
well, Rozeta’s manual is more comprehensive about features i’m interested in, so i was sure it does what i want, and bought it now.
anyway, i’m likely to buy Riffer someday as well.
icegear Lagrange is quite the synth, especially with the two free preset packs available. i havent found much that tickles my fancy quite like this synth app. its sorta sonically similar to the OP1 but sounds way better imo, so if lofi or ambient figures into your equation at all, this is one to beat for sure.
