Do you use a handy recorder? What kind of things do you record? How do you use it with your elektron gear? OT crazy samples? Share what you’ve made.
There are already enough guys walking around major cities with a reel to reel tape recorder banging on trash cans and kicking soda cans around on uneven pavement,
Get some random ambient sounds. Revolving doors sound pretty cool if you throw them through some filters. I recorded the sounds of the airport with a little Zoom once and it was perfect for a muted intro to a track (never ended up getting past the "unnamed project on the OT stage, but it might…)- everyone can hardly make out what they’re hearing- it immediately grabs your attention. I plan to do more of this Get the sound of “quiet” if you ever notice it. Get crowded. Get busy (restaurants with big hectic kitchens are perfect). I want to get totally out of context conversations between strangers, people on the phone- I sample most things into total obscurity anyway, but it would be even more cryptic when even I had no idea what the hell the person was talking about.
Some of the most memorable things in tracks are samples that just come out of nowhere.
Beastie Boys “If it’s gonna be that kinda party, I’m gonna stick my dick in the mashed potates…” It comes right after 3 of the best songs of their career on arguably their best album- you’re all pumped up and serious and then BAM.
DJ Shadow- Mutual Slump (which I am listening to right now- never miss a chance to throw entroducing on…): “Do you feel like Darth Vader?”- you could puzzle over the context of that question for at least 5-10 minutes every time you hear the song. I’m sure there are people who know where it comes from but please don’t tell me. The mystery is important.
Nine Inch Nails- Piggy- the entire famous drum solo (and a lot of the drums on that entire record and the next) was just Trent going around micing up every possible space- indoors and outdoors, supposedly public bathrooms, etc. he liked the weird ambient noise of. Of course he was on a ton of Cocaine at the time, so that’s an extreme example.
Can anyone think of any more totally random or out of context samples like that? There has to be a ton in House.
head to your local music store with a jack lead & recorder and play around with whatever machines/guitars/bongos they have on display and allow people to tinker with; if you know the sales assistant and they know you are already a gear buyer with GAS they probably won’t mind, as you might get hooked on something
you can pick up a load of unquantisized random sample noodlings on a range of equipment
Oh yes, most definitely. If I cut it up into a kit I’ll use it in the OT, otherwise I often drop longer clips in Live.

For samples like above mentioned i’m using my mobilephone (s3). Recording 5 minutes thru some streets with less or more traffic, some locals talking , birds and so on
the quality is very good
Quite a winning situation
