Getting This Sound

A Bit of a shot in the dark, i’m no expert on what synths make what sounds as probably my knowledge is more sampling off records etc but does anyone know what synth Larry Heard used on the arpeggiated intro to Stars

I know he was using roland gear, juno, jupiter etc, also digital synths

Any ideas ?

It’s hard to say exactly; it’s a pretty simple sound – you could do it with any number of synths really. I made a similar-ish arp on a track recently using a Toraiz AS-1 (https://soundcloud.com/simonmackie/sequence-begins, arp from about 1.20 or so), so perhaps he could have made it on a Sequential Pro One. According to http://www.oldschooldaw.com/forums/index.php?topic=1134.0 he did have a Pro One in May 92, so maybe he had one back when he made that track, too? Just a guess really though.

My first thought is that this is Jupiter 6. The envelopes and HPF are distinctive.

LOL.

Nailed it, he has one in the pic on that page that spikysimon linked to.

cheers I thought it might be, i’d seen that photo before as well so i’ve got a couple of options maybe the toraiz or a jp08, it would need to be small so both fit the bill

Yeah those are good choices. You should be able to pull off something similar with a Roland JX3P/MKS-30/JX03 as well.

A DSI Evolver could fit the bill as well since it’s small, has that sound and can also be used for external processing.

cool i’ll look into these too, as I say due to lack of space it’s gotta be something small-ish and maybe quite versatile
