Out of curiosity, how often do you all buy new gear and what is your budget annually? I have not bought anything except for tools in almost 2 years.
I’m all in or nothing
Usually about half of what I end up spending.
I don’t usually buy anything without first selling something else. Especially in today’s market, when nothing really groundbreaking is coming out, as I hate to have overlapping/redundant gear in the studio.
Budget
What’s my maximum credit on pay-later plans is a better question. It’ll work itself out later
I stash away my bank account rewards (£10 - £50 a month) into a separate account for gear purchases and top it up with the proceeds of selling old gear. That’s my budget.
Have I stuck to it this year? Err, no.
im a rich bich
as long as ramen exist new gear will exist
sounds like it with the many expensive gear buys each week that folks brag about lol
gotta have priorities. Some go without home or car ownership to fund new shiny synth toys.
5% of OP-XY
£0.00 for the last 10 years. If I buy something new something old has to be sold.
Well this year my budget was about -£2000.
Pretty much liquidated all my gear down to the bare minimum now, no plans to buy anything else for the foreseeable (except maybe a new Mac mini).
Do cables count? Is audio gear that’s not used for Musik making part of it?
Overall averaged out I’d guess 200€. More this year then the last few, but most had no gear, and I did get more disposable money. Still, looking at devices for multiple thousands… If I sell all gear I’m maaaybe reaching an op-xy , but then that would be my only piece and I would have to have a ton of luck.
That’s still budgetable.
You could for instance tag 15% of a 30K collection to sell annually, yielding a budget of 4.5K.
True, I was just talking in terms of earnings though, in that I don’t set aside any income for gear anymore, generally.
My budget is down to what I make on side hustles, eBay selling, helping my mate at record fairs. I spent a fair old whack in the last 18 months but tbh thinking of what I ‘need’ in the year ahead I don’t think I’ll be spending very much at all.
This post will no doubt bite my arse though.
I’m also in the camp of gear purchases being strictly funded by selling other gear. I’ve been doing this for years and it works well for me. I very rarely buy anything new, and I don’t mind waiting years for a good deal to pop up on something I want.
This way of doing it means that my budget varies greatly year to year. More often than not I come out a little bit ahead so the annual total has increased over time.
Going into reds is never an option for me.
I only buy if i can afford it.
