FX track workaround on DN2

Hey guys

I found that adjusting the reverb high shelf created a cool effect on my DN2 which unlike A4/AR we can’t modulate with an LFO. If I remember correctly.

One workaround I thought of , and was wondering if anyone has tried it , is to create two patterns , one with the FX shelf adjust and then use song mode to swop between each pattern every few steps like an LFO. ha - sounds pretty whacky in theory. Anyone try anything like this?

Dan

On most elektron devices you can change all fx settings per pattern … and patterns can be 2 steps if you want … getting out of the 16/32/48/64 step mindset can get some nice variations.
Either use pattern chain or song mode.

Plus as it’s changing on a step , the changes are effectively quantised when they change pattern.

Try changing delay time between different tempo syncd values and you’ll get more noticeable results

Unfortunately since the digis are also missing the direct jump feature (present on A4 and Rytm) every pattern change will reset to step 1.

But if each pattern is only 1 or 2 steps then it’ll change pretty quickly. ( if you experiment with pattern change length )
Min generally using small step counts on patterns and different fx settings you can get some unusual fx , all in sync.

It is possible to modulate fx parameters with a midi track, and a midi cable between in and out.
There is a dedicated midi channel for that.

Still, it’s a bit of a pity you need to resort to such arrangements on an elaborate machine like the DN2

Yes, it was already possible with Machinedrum…

This was one of the things I was slightly disappointed by in the Digitone 2 and Digitakt 2. I was hoping for some FX block type functionality from Syntakt. I wasn’t expecting anything analog, but being able to modulate the delay and reverb opens up a lot of potential, delay especially.

ah yes of course! cool! I can use my expressiveE touche to ‘play’ that effect in this case without having to do song mode etc workaround  sweet

I love the direct jump feature- this is why i am not a big fan of the Digis

Direct jump
Fx track

With the new architecture on the DN2 I can kinda see an update bringing the FX track functionality from the AR/A4 to the DN2… I’d love that, been trying to create some dub-ish delays and it sucks not being able to automate the delay time/width with an LFO

Yeah maybe! Given the 16 tracks are flexible between midi and presets , why not! Cuckoo said the new system is super powerful … if the Tonwerk is real, typically Elektron will debut a bunch of stuff there then trickle that down later. I still think the Syntakt was just a R&D recoop on some of the new approaches (insert fx) we’ll see later on a TOTL machine.

The Syntakt is a good example too. Of course we can’t expect analog filters and drive but other digital insert FX would be welcome.

You can effectively do direct jump on the Digis. Use Func + Yes to save the current pattern. Go into the pattern selection screen. Copy the pattern you want to direct jump to by holding the trig and pressing copy. Then exit the pattern selection screen, then use Func + Paste to paste the copied pattern on top of the currently playing pattern. It will play the copied pattern from the same position as the currently playing pattern, effectively the same as direct jump. Then to revert back to the original pattern use Func + No to reload the saved state.

Not quite as smooth as direct jump, but still pretty effective.
