In what other forum would something like that happen. Can’t say I’ve ever been gifted gear, but warms my frigid, bitter heart to be a part of a community like this.
Edit: Actually, I did give someone who knew their way around a soldering iron a free Nord Lead 2X that was kinda on the blink. So, I’m due something out of the clear blue sky at some point🤞
Free, nothing more than a cable. But I’ve gotten some amazing deals here that have changed the course of my musical journey, and I think at least part of that was the wish to see things go to a fellow enthusiast. Plus I don’t know how to put a dollar figure on the advice, encouragement, and empathy I’ve gotten.
I will not forget the generosity that got you those devices, and it may inspire me in the near future, should I tire of anything I currently have.
No ‘Nauts on my list but I’ve got quite a few bits out on long term loan to friends etc. My mates lad has my BS2 and another friends daughter has got my Drumbrute. She’s actually studying for a music degree and specialises as a percussionist so how much use she’ll get out of it I don’t know. Her dad has got a fretless Warwick of mine but I know he uses that quite a bit. There’s a few other bits and bobs out on loan too.
I’ve never received any free gear, but I have gotten a lot of free and helpful advice from multiple 'naughts, which has been more valuable than all my gear combined.
It’s a really nice song too! I’d be vibing with this definitely, on a dancefloor. Great melody how it moves around. The gear went to the right person I’d say:)
@Scot_Solida has surprised me by throwing in a couple of vintage synth books with used gear purchases, and recently gave me an extra pair of holders for my new Jaspers stand he just had “lying around.” He’s the best.
A move like this is considered a bit over the normal generosity - I actually don’t know how to categorize it.
They had to package everything up to then send out via UPS; and I’m pretty sure shipping that medium sized box wasn’t free.
I mean, it’s a substantial little batch of instruments that pair well with each other - Why didn’t they just sell these 3+ items for cheap to someone locally? I will never know.
I’m still processing all this; all the while making beats of course.
I can understand it. You advertise it locally and you get people lowballing your already low prices, people who are going to flip your items for more money, people who are flaky in various ways… you can offer them for $ here instead of $$, but money just gets in the way, and a hundred isn’t going to matter to you one way or another… so why not just give and make a real impact, not only on the recipient but on others. That’s why I’m keeping it in mind. Keep putting them to good use, and pay it forward when you’re in a position to do so.
rare nice deed, simple as. Someone randomly gave me an AppStore voucher once. Happens, would happen more often if more people leant that way but the fact is you’re much more likely to find yourself on the giving end than receiving realistically. Anyone with an average job could witness such an event every month if they were so inclined
This beat was meant for the Elekronauts, so I had to make it bass heavy - using a free Volca Samples!
And thanks for pointing that out, I try to keep my basslines/melodies seem like ‘shapes’ going back and fourth dancing around to (semi) normal electro rhythms.
However, composing melodic sequence like that on a 16-step grid is quite difficult to get right. Since the Elektron sequencer isn’t polymeric, one generally needs use a different approach to make it sound like a track has “last-step” functionality - you can’t easily shift the sequence left or right while in a long pattern chain, so things get messy fast!
Nothing free. But I did get an Octatrack MK1 at a very low price from a generous ‘naut. Amazing generosity. This topic reminds me that I need to do the same thing on here with some piece of gear that I don’t use anymore.
I once went to a talk from David Holmes at a music event and I asked him about his record collection in the q&a. He said he had tons I could have if I can collect. Got a taxi straight there after and he gave me around 1000 records. All types of music including promos and test pressings. He was the DJ that introduced me to dance music in my late teens and a huge influence so I was beyond pleased.
