interesting stuff here. admittedly i’m not well versed in the intricacies of private capital so ima let the pros here handle that.
i am, however, looking forward to seeing how this investment strategy handles supply chain disruptions, semiconductor shortages, and consumer demand patterns. like how much we investing in innovation vs operational costs/growth and what have you.
The current owner Jonas Hillman has a proven track record by now. Bonnier has not, yet.
Arctos Equity apparently didn’t have a controlling share of the company or the option to buy it, so they couldn’t really wreak havoc like Bonnier is able to do, just provide money. Correct me if I’m wrong.
I don’t know why YouTube has always refused to share his new posts for years, so I’ve had to check his channel manually. That is, until his recent Tonverk videos. To me, it’s a clear sign that the giant brain behind YouTube’s algorithm knows Elektron has a bright future. I’m obviously right, and there’s no need to correct me
Exciting times, a business needs investment to grow and if investors deem a business worthy of a significant capital injection it means the business is doing something right, it is after all how free markets work. I can’t wait to see what is next.
This is how acquisitions are usually sold to the employees of the acquired company, regardless of industry. “Same as before, but with more money” - unfortunately, it rarely is exactly like that.
The reality on most basic level is, all sorts of changes tend to happen - in culture, decision making, processes, etc. Some will be okay with that but some definitely will not. And all of this will inevitably affect the outcomes and future direction one way or another.
Does it have to be all gloom and doom, not necessarily. But the concerns are perfectly valid simply from a pattern recognition standpoint alone.
Welcome to the forums. I’m my experience, all sorts of changes tend to happen within a company all the time, whether it’s because of changed market conditions, a team reorg, a new CEO or a new product launch. So yes, there will surely be changes with an acquisition too - nothing ever stays the same, ever.
I’m just sharing my own thoughts on this acquisition. As an owner of their gear for years, I’ve noticed a slowdown in firmware updates and a sense of them being a bit stretched thin across all current products. That’s the kind of thing that more fuel in the tank tends to fix, which is why I read this as good news for Elektron. We’ll see.
Thank you! By the way, your demos were a large reason for me to convince me get my first Elektron piece so thank you for that, too.
I have my own acquisition PTSD to thank for hypercautious attitude and I am mainly looking at it from a more general standpoint, no huge personal stake or experience specific to Elektron.
Surely the market didn’t help with staying afloat independently. Most of this gear isn’t sold to people who make profit off music and hobby budgets are only getting thinner.
‘’their instruments have only gotten better since then. " Debatable, for sure. I’ve never owned a MD or a MM, but I have most of the later boxes and all videos of the elders display a truly unique sound signature and modularity that leave me truly pining for reissues.
Nice to hear, I’m glad that my tutorials have been helpful!
Yeah, it’s more of a subjective remark based on the main piece of Elektron gear I’ve had in the past few years, and it could be totally incorrect.
To be clear, I didn’t mean it as a complaint - it was more a way to illustrate how I see the acquisition as potentially helpful rather than destructive.
Korg and Roland have often dipped into the well of reissuing classics to much financial gain. Not from a niche fan boy user perspective complaining about how they don’t make em like they used to, I think it would do Bonnier good to do some marketing investigation regarding the feasibility of MM and MD reissues or even MK3’s.
In all fairness, I don’t think investing in Elektron for the sake of milking the cow would be a good financial move. This market is probably not really easy to navigate without some expertise, so it would be much easier to invest in something that’s also easy to sell and more scalable than developing complex music machines for a niche market inside a niche market.
That’s why I think that Elektron is not in financial trouble but is genuinely seeking someone to partner with them to expand the Elektron universe.
