What is everyone’s favorite fm synth vst? I saw that native instruments fm8 was on sale and it got me thinking I don’t ever do any fm synthesis and it might be worth picking up a vst for it…
ableton’s operator for ease of use, fm8 for sounding really good.
F.'em is a FM masterpice.
Love the Fors max for live synths -if you’re an Ableton user. They’re amazing sounding and playful fm devices that I’ve been using a lot in my tracks, and the latest drum synth/machine they released called Opal is really sick and has become a favourite especially with lots of Elektron people on this forum. (not VST though sadly, only works with Ableton and Push).
I love the Fors M4L devices and I’m using them most days at the moment.
FM8, it’s $10 right now.
FM8 is definitely worth picking up on the current sale. While the UI needs an overhaul (it doesn’t just look dated, but has some things we’ve learned not to do over the years like requiring a “secret” right-click for basic actions like enabling operators, but I digress) it actually becomes pretty quick to use once you learn its quirks, and as mentioned it sounds great. Critically, while the UI may be stuck in 2003, NI has been updating it on the tech side and it now runs as a VST3, and natively on Apple Silicon if you’re on Mac.
Chipsynth OPS7 is a great DX7 clone. Loads all the classic DX7 sysex files out there.
I love Ableton’s Operator, don’t particularly love FM8. But I would grab FM8 at $10 if I didn’t already have it.
Abelton Wavetable can also do Fm, its only 2 OP, but has a wide range.
Ableton Operator is my go to. I have FM8 but that UI is yucky. Tbf I haven’t spent the time to learn it but I have better things to do than learn that one lol.
Another vote here for FM8. UI is rough, but it sounds so good.
I’m doodling with Opsix native.
It has some drawing issues in 4k scaling (nothing that hold you off), but anyway, it’s the opsix in your box.
Looks like I’m leaning toward fm8 right now… surprised no one has mentioned something I didn’t k ow about already.
I’ve used Dexed, which was really handy for sending DX-7 patches over to the Volca FM (when I used to own it). And it’s free.

But the OpSix Native plugin is very cool.
Another vote for Opsix, I really like UI and sound, very flexible with custom algos and operator types.
With FM8 and Dexed I only really used presets, since I’m not particular fan of UI. But they sound good too.
Awesome thanks everyone. I saw I had some points or whatever at plugin boutique, so FM8 was only $2. So I couldn’t say no to that.
have always been curious about Flow Motion, but its Waves
