Fennesz and Noise etc

Hi there,

I mainly use hardware synths with Ableton but am really interested in exploring a more noisy and distorted sound and love the work of likes of Fennesz and Rafael Anton Irisarri. I know that they digitally process their sound but don’t really know what type of software they use. Anybody out there who can point me in the right direction, please?

Thank you

This might help you regarding Fennesz. I’ve played many times with him over the years (and even provided the sounds for his first ever 7" single!), and he uses MaxMSP on his laptop running patches, whilst running his guitar through a variety of pedals. A quite neat little set up

And Rafael is using Ableton Live running sequences, plus live guitar in a similar way to Fennesz, bu then running it though a bunch of guitar pedals, including Eventide and Moog pedals

Thanks Robin - that is really helpful

When somebody uses hardware, you can often see what they are using. But when they are using software and laptops, it often remains a mystery.

Love your recent album, by the way - absolutely stunning

I think you should be able to pull it off using anything, it’s not really about the gear, as tim hecker says. Check out slate and ash plugins. If you want fennesz or hecker vibes. Great stuff

Yeah - Cycles looks great and I’m going to start with that. It’s good to get recommendations

I should have mentioned Tim Hecker in my original post too

I recently bought auras, it’s great. I want cycles as well for granular exploration. Bitwig has lots of great fx as well. It’s nice to see someone mention fennesz. Black Sea and Agora are some of favourite ambient/drone albums.

Ah, that’s really kind of you. Plenty more to come too. Not that this is the place to promote stuff but since you mention it I’m just about to release a rather handsome picture disc LP too

Cycles and Auras are fabulous tools actually. Just been reworking material of mine back from 1996 for a release next year, and have been running parts through Cycles and mashing them up wonderfully, but in a very musical way too

I’ve known Rafael for about 18 years or so. We used to attend each other’s shows and whatnot. He lists a good deal of his hardware and software on his website.
