Favourite monosynth / synth with built in arp / sequencer for jamming / happy accidents

Looking for a new synth to jam with specifically with its own sequencer or arp that you can alter on the fly eg I’ve had my eye on the Roland system 1 for a while and played with one a few times, I like the arp / scatter function and the sound and can just jam with it, also I recently watched a video on the minibrute 2 which looked great fun ( demoed by Alex Mylar melodies) , I know the mother 32 has built in sequencer but looks a bit fiddly and also the manther etc, which are your favourites for sound and jamming / happy accidents

I think the Pro-One has a fantastic sequencer for this sort of thing. You can trigger the sequences with a gate signal or audio if you don’t have something sending gate. I’ve done this a number of times where I’ll throw together a few synth lines in an improv scenario during performances.

The original is getting pricey now but perhaps the Behringer clone will include similar functionality.

i think the mother 32 sequencer is pretty cool

Monologue seems also interesting.

Yeah, I like the Monologue sequencer. Though, er, I have a System-1 for sale, so that. Yeah. The System-1 has no sequencer obviously, but it is quite a nice arp to latch and play around with, for sure.

Also, take a look at the Arturia Keystep sequencer, that’s brilliant and can be used with any synthesizer:

I was thinking that myself, is the keystep sequencer the same as the on in the minibrute 2 ?

I think there are a lot of similarities, not sure if it’s exactly the same. But I’d be surprised if it was any less featured than the Minibrute 2.

Will look into it further, although I think I would prefer it built in rather than seperate sequencer

The System 8 may be worth looking into as well; it has a sequencer. In fact, you can run two sequences at once. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=6J1NaRs7DTo

Don’t have one (yet), but I’m gasing on a Mono Station.

Moog Grandmother

Yeah, I played with the grandmother at synthfest, love the sound and sequencer but perhaps a bit too big for what i’m after

Mono Station or Bass Station 2.

Electribe 2, (synth version) sounds really good when sequencing it like a couple of mono synths plus drums.

The synth sounds have wide sweet spots, which make on the fly jamming a lot of fun and you can real time record all the knob changes.

The gate arp and groove type, both of which can be adjusted whilst the sequence is playing, add to the fun.

Others i’ve looked at but never used are dominion 1 and club, Avalon bass line (doesn’t look like these are available anymore) the new quantrantid swarm from eowave looks interesting, anyone have any experience of any of these, I know you can change the Avalon sequence live, not sure about the dominions

I have a pro-2.

Still discovering it …

you get one track for note sequence + 16 associated tracks for parameter modulation ect…
sequencer is really intuitive to use so that you can easilly explore with trial/error, yet can be really deep, precise and powerful.

sequence can be triggered and transposed by the keyboard with quantization to tempo .
Many direct controls (lot of pots, touch sliders, mod/pitch Wheel, aftertouch…).

Incredible live tweaking instrument to me!

it’s a beast but quite an expensive beast though …

Can you alter the sequence while it plays though? I know with the minibrute you can add notes and rests, alter length etc while it is running wheras on my microbrute you input the notes and that’s it, you have to stop the sequencer, and input new notes if you want to change it

you can desactivate note sequencing, leaving you with the keyboard and 16 tracks of automation following you!!!

or you can live edit the notes of the sequence while the sequencer is running with the help of the OLED screen and input encoders.
