How can i enter midi notes on the OT?
Can i use the keyboard on the A4?
Or is the only way to manually adjust the pitch for each trig?

You should be able to enter MIDI notes directly using Chromatic mode (page 83 of the current manual). Use Function and Down to select it, then Function and Left / Right to switch octaves (you can go beyond the 2 octave sampler limit with MIDI tracks). Trig LED colours mark the notes (yellow for C, red for white keys, black keys unlit).
Obviously you won’t get velocity etc., but if course you wouldn’t get that with the A4 buttons either. You will get a wider playing range than the A4 offers, though.
In the chromatic mode im able to play the notes, but when i want to place a note trig on the midi track i need to press the rec button, and so im not in chromatic mode anymore. There has to be something im doing wrong?
So how can i enter midi notes without leaving the chromatic mode?
You should be able to enter Live Recording mode (hold down Rec and press Play) and then use Chromatic Mode to play directly into the sequencer (I’m not with my OT right now, but maybe try switching to Chromatic Mode after recording starts?).
You need to use Live Recording for this because it’s the trig keys that set the pitch - obviously in Grid Recording mode they set the position of the note in the sequence, so there’d be a conflict recording Chromatic Mode data in Grid Recording mode.
Hi,
yes you can use the A4´s keyboard to enter midi notes on the OT when you are in MIDI-MODE, you can enter 4 Notes (aka chords) per step, but the A4 cannot be used to send MIDI sequences.
You have to setup the OT to receive midi data (AutoChannel) and the A4 to send midi data (AutoChannel) the keyboard of the A4 sends midi data /note information from the keyboard (in MIDI setup-> Keyboard INT+EXT)
OT
-enter midi mode
-enter grid record (REC)
-hold a trig
A4
-enter notes with the keyboard
the OT should now have received the note data on the trig (up to 4 notes)
You can use any external midi keyboard to enter notes on the OT, just remember to setup your midi ch (AutoChannel) etc. grid record (REC) mode and hold a trig + enter notes with your keyboard.
You can also do it in live record mode (REC+PLAY).
Have fun!
So far ive only used grid recording mode cause i like to set the position of the note in the sequence.
So if i understand this correctly the only way to set the pitch in grid recording mode is by holding a trig and manually select the pitch with the encoder? Or can i use i.e the A4 “keyboard” to do this?
As per AriHaf’s suggestion, you should be able to hold the trig for the step on the OT (in grid mode) and then press a key on the A4 to set the note (once you’ve followed the MIDI setup instructions). It sounds just like setting any other p-lock, but using the A4 keyboard instead of an OT encoder.
Yeah that should work. I use a midi controller to enter notes the same way. You can even enter chords this way too. Hold down the trig and enter each note of the chord one at a time and it will fill in each of the 4 spots.
Thanks a lot. I will follow these midi instructions setup when i get back home, and hopefully things will work out just fine.
Great. It seems to be working very well.
As a follow up on this here are another question.
I can adjust and plock velocity for each individual step, but is it possible to adjust velocity for all steps simultainously?
Hi
im having a similar problem just got my OT figured out how to send midi to my Externals but i cant see
how to change each of the triggers notes, i have figured it out as shown above with a keyboard, but i would like to know how its done if i just have the OT with me and want to write a line with varying notes
Place a trig. Hold it and turn the notes knobs, and RTFM !
After 2 years with my OT i didn’t know this way to write chords -_-
thank you !
Hi i AM new in octatrack which are the notes knobs ?
Midi mode > first parameter page knobs.
Great thread folks.
I learnt a great deal, thank you.
I’ve been through the manual and tried several set up but this is something I can’t wrap my head around: do you have to use the AutoChannel to input midi notes from an external keyboard?
I am trying to input notes from the REV2 and it will only work if if it is sending to the Octa AutoChannel, and not if I match the Midi Track channel number.
You already have the answer apparently…
I am in denial…
