Elektronauts get a fresh update!

But you do.

It’s already happening wether discourse is upgraded or not. Your posts are public, and are thus shared with any automated search facility, wether that’s a regular search engine, AI training, archive.org or whatever.

it’s a bit different, just because SE crawled the pages and have the snippets of text stored, they don’t have the context, the whole “AI” thingy connects that data with a context, i.e., user action/query/whatever to connect it to a data, a random stored keyword based blobs of text don’t really compare.
just because google scanned a whole page doesn’t mean it knows how this text got into fruition, what happens with the real-time LLM embedding is it records the process, so it’s a bit different…

either way, I understand that there’s no escaping this, but I do see a difference between having a search engine crawler and embedded LLM function.

Who wants summary of topics with thousands of post a day with everyone telling more or less the same thing over and over because no one read the thousands of posts before them?

… Maybe people with a job, a life outside the forum, family, friends … I don’t know
It can help when you are looking for a concise understanding of a topic in order to see if people actually tell something interesting or just their usual random ***

And even more,

So, users should also better read what they agree with, because most of us allowed AI to use our content in one way or another.

I’m not taking any side, but I personally find annoying when people don’t try to understand what they’re fighting for or against. Reality is that all our current content was already used by AI WITH our permission.

Back to topic, regular updates of the platform are mandatory to prevent any hacks and timely fix any vulnerabilities. I wouldn’t want to find my profile hacked one day just because of bug in discourse which was fixed two versions ago.

Envisage that some of these AI features are a pre-req to continue using discourse. That’s usually how they get you.

I hope those against Ai / digital ID / Social credit scoring / Mind & Hive Control… are starting to think about how they can build their lives better offline.

You can get away from it by working in the trades, owning your own business, advertising in local papers, advertising for local meet-ups in papers, going to local fairs.

It might mean changing careers and doing something different but certain industries will need less head count.

I can survive offline now.

an important clause in that CC - You may not use the material for commercial purposes .

I do think it’s hard, nearly impossible to monetize google search results, I do think it’s easy to monetize AI data, that data is shared and sold to anyone doing any LLM driven product, meaning the context that goes from this website directly into hands of LLMs is being sold instantly to developers like personal assistants and whatnot.
the chance that our data was monetized by SE just because it was indexed is very slim, it will be monetized from now on though without issues…

yeah my “toxicity” score probably over 100 by now, waiting for Claude-3-Opus to ban me so the community can be finally nice

Technically, you can try.
There are GDPR and “Right to be forgotten” in EU. Something similar should exist in US as well.

Or you can manually remove all your posts. Some folks on reddit do that.

This will not change the past and relearn AIs, but your content will not be used in the future.

However, if you will continue to post, you will have to accept the same rules again. Unfortunately, in the internet if you use some “free” service, most likely you pay with your data. Every platform where you see ads actually selling you to advertisers.
Elektronauts is rare exception where you don’t see any ads.

If AI could tell me that this thread about a routine and long overdue software update with a laundry list of welcome features and one tiny mention of AI (which they go out of their way to say won’t be enabled and will only even be considered after a lot of review) had turned exclusively into a bitch fest of poorly informed people complaining about practices they already themselves contribute to in countless ways — well, it could have saved me 10 minutes.

Thanks again for the work on the update. I know it’s needed and I’m sorry it’s literally tuned into a thankless task.

skim reading is a skill that gets better with practice.
it’s sad that people are so quick to turn their brains off and let an LLM do their reading/writing/whatever for them, when they can do it themselves with a little bit of effort

I’m open to objective AI moderation since moderation is necessary and an objective AI may ultimately be more fair.

Same as mental calculation, you get better at it practicing … yet, you most probably use a calculator…

i do if the calculation is complicated enough. for simpler math i try to do a lot in my head, just to practice. it’s useful if i’m in a situation without a calculator.

Sure, and so, brought back to my example, in a topic with even just 100 of posts a day, it takes time to read.
Of course if you’ve got just a couple answers, and hopefully on subject, you can read through…

yeah. this thread for example has 100 posts right now, it takes about 20 seconds to skimread and get a decent understanding what people are argueing about.

Must be you I guess …
Anyways …

…So fresh and so clean… :musical_note:

Hmm. Feels nice and crisp and responsive. Need to switch off dark mode though (when I can find the switch).

Rather oddly it won’t let me log in from my work IP address but I can browse. Had to log in on the laptop tethered to my phone.

Edit: now I’m logged in, I can post from my work IP address. How odd.

Anyhow, well done @LyingDalai and colleagues. Having run a large forum for many years, I know just how nerve destroying this sort of thing can be, even when it all goes super straightforwardly in practice.

On my external monitor, Elektronauts now has a ton of empty space on the sides. The actual section for reading posts feels cramped. On my laptop screen it looks like it should. I’ll have to see if there are settings I can adjust or if this is something I’ll just have to get used to.
