Guitar infused remix by Bibio of Clarke’s “Ted”:
Good guitar and amp sounds in glitch dub techno. Definitely moody.
Kerala Dust does it really well.
I really like the mix of guitars, synths, and (sometimes) electronic drums on old the Ladytron stuff, especially Witching Hour.
Yeah, I love the first three albums but have always felt this one is so underrated. I remember the label put it out with barely any fanfare as well, I had a hard time even finding a copy in the week of release.
Ah yes, I love Jeff Parker’s album Forfolks!
Andrew Peckler’s latest release has a similar thing going on.
Correction: I was mistaken. Jeff Parker was in Tortoise, not Portishead, but he’s worth checking out if you like minimal guitar with electronics.
…another one I haven’t seen mentioned here is the band Disco Inferno. Their guitars were connected to midi which would trigger sampled soundscapes as they played.
totally dig this one :
Reading through this thread makes me wonder;
Where (or who?) is the line between a band using electro sources/instruments and an actual electronic act using live instruments?
Also I’ll nominate Gilla Band. They don’t really use synthesizers but the guitarist Alan Duggan uses his guitar in a very synth way - heavily processed, walls of noise - and their live shows are more akin to a rave than a “rock concert”.
need new tortoise so bad ![]()
Interesting distinction without a real answer.
I see a lot of acts I consider “electronic” up their live game and incorporate live instruments and excellent players in after earlier focus on studio work.
Ratatat!
Well, not especially dark or moody, but they’re the first group I thought of for guitars in electronic music.
I’ll second 65daysofstatic. Really cool sound that does get dreamy and dark at points. I love their Wild Light album and have listened to it countless times.
The guitar solo at 4:25 is sooo gud
My band, Society Burning, has been combining synth and guitar for a long time (industrial rock). While synth dominant, guitar and also bass can feature as well.
Examples - (hope I am not being too presumptuous!)
Americant (guitar and bass, I play bass here along with synth bass, and other synth very present)
War on the Truth ( I play all the crunchy guitars - synth bass etc)
Internal Combustion No. 3 ( guitars in chorus, lots of synth action)
One more: Awaken (2024 mix). I play bass (again doubled w synth bass), my buddy Brian beings the guitar, and lots of other heavy synth and drum loops.
And just because, one of my solo efforts. I play all the synths / drum programming/ guitar and sing all but the ‘pain’ and ‘lies’ lines.
Yeah, important distinction. Live drums, electric guitar, rock vocals and rock song structures make a rock band, even if there’s a sequencer, a synth bass and a couple of samples thrown in. Ie Depeche Mode (post 1990), industrial metal, etc.
While I’d argue that DAF have always been an electronic act, even when they had a live drummer. Their whole form of music is based around looping (and transposing) a 16 step sequencer, resulting in those atonal, alienated bass lines – which are not derived from rock, blues or jazz.
