Kind of sounds like you’ve done your diligence, might be time to contact doboz…
I had to try three TRS MIDI cables to find one that worked with the DVNA, maybe its just picky like that?
Things to try (in DVNA settings)
- Note source is MIDI
- Control source is MIDI
- MIDI channel is correct/matching
- Hi Res is off (on E16 & DVNA, I couldn’t get that to work)
Also make SURE the MIDI channel matches on the E16 - i’ve made instrument defs that had the wrong channel set before. My E16 instrument defs are attached above in the thread (mine is set to 9)
That looks likely from all the troubleshooting.
The most common issue with TRS midi is the wrong type of TRS but dvna says it can cope with either type. Could be worth trying one of those converters that swaps between type A and type B just to rule that out.
If you dont have a converter you can rig one up (just for testing) with a couple of trs cables and some crocodile clip connectors - the pin outs for the two types of trs are available here:
Yes tried many various brands and length TRS cables. Note source and control source is MIDI. MIDI channel is correct and matching. Hi-Res is switched off.
I know the TRS cable is correct and working and settings are correct, because I saw a SINGLE line of MIDI cc message appearing on the DVNA’s MIDI monitoring page when i rotate a knob on the E16 and that was it. No further repeated CC went through no matter how much i turn the knobs. I am so puzzled. The fault may be on the E16 instead? I don’t know.
Can you plug the E16 into a computer MIDI interface and see what its outputting?
Here’s my E16 DVNA config - see if that works with the DVNA on channel 9?
Doboz DVNA.oxiindef (7.3 KB)
Hi and thank you for the Doboz file. I have tried it on channel 9 or any other channels. The TRS cable works. The MIDI works. I’ve found out that the E16 transmits cc to the DVNA fine when the Dest1-Type is set to Note as i can see the note on off messages scrolling on the DVNA midi monitor page. But the E16 does not transmit any cc when the Dest1-Type is set to CC Abs.
I may have isolated the issue. Here’s my test…
The OXI E16 is set to transmit CC15 on the same MIDI channel, with Page MIDI Out set to ALL. Its USB output is connected to Snoize MIDI Monitor on my Mac, while E16 OUT2 is connected directly to the DVNA.
When I turn the encoder, Snoize receives every continuous CC15 value correctly. However, the DVNA MIDI Monitor receives only the first CC15 message and then ignores all subsequent values.
I also found that if I send a different type of MIDI message in between, the DVNA receives exactly one new CC message, then stops responding to further CC values again.
Since the E16 is sending the same data simultaneously over USB and TRS, this appears to rule out the encoder setup and strongly suggests that the DVNA may not be correctly parsing repeated Control Change messages that use standard MIDI running status.
I sent an email to Doboz asking them if the current DVNA firmware supports MIDI running status for repeated CC messages? At this stage, the DVNA firmware appears to be the more likely source of the problem rather than the E16.
Have you tried to monitor the output from the E16 out1/out2?
It does, I can see a list of CC messages when I monitor and turn the E16 encoders.
Check non-USB MIDI from the E16 to your computer. May be the TRS cable, or the E16 port.
If you’re using the config I shared it does work.
Somethings not right with one of your boxes, and it isn’t the DVNA firmware.
I don’t want to jump the gun but I know MIDI Running Status will be added to the next firmware so I assume that it currently isn’t supported.
10 Minutes of Fun with the Polyend Tracker+ and Doboz DVNA!
Enjoy! ^^
Does anyone know if there’s an ETA for the new batch?
this is the message I’ve received from Mate, just yesterday:
Thanks so much for reaching out! Unfortunately, production has been delayed due to the manufacturing of the aluminium cases.
I don’t have a firm date yet, hopefully in the first half of August.
Thanks for your patience!
Thanks for sharing that! I can stop obsessively refreshing their webpage then, until August at least ![]()
