DT+DN beginner MIDI questions, direct MIDI simultaneously with USB MIDI through Ableton, and how to control global mutes on another device

Hi!

I always thought MIDI felt a bit cryptic and inaccessible so haven’t bothered to learn it properly, though I often wish I was more knowledgeable since it’s obviously super useful.

Anyway, been experimenting with it a bit today with DT + DN combo. Some questions that have come up are:

  • if I run both machines through Ableton with Overbridge, can I still use direct MIDI at the same time? For example - I can start the sequencers simultaneously through Ableton. But is there a way to do transport send from DT > DN while still using overbridge to record the individual tracks?
  • Is it possible to set up four MIDI tracks on the DT that act as mutes for the DN? So for example, while MIDI A on the DT is unmuted, track 1 on the DN is muted and if I mute track A, it mutes track 1 on DN? I know there’s a CC94 mute parameter but I don’t understand how to set it up and again, I’m not sure if the overbridge + Ableton USB MIDI connection messes things up.

Would be super grateful if anyone could give me some pointers.
