Oh ok (Gerald’s wife) i didn’t scroll all the way… just read the first message of the thread and few recent reply, i realize later that this thread is old. And this thread kinda became the Drexciya place for discussions
Thanks for the information NBZ

Gerald Donald has released several notable albums with different groups, the best known being Dopplereffekt. This electro duo is currently made up of Gerald Donald and his wife Michaela To-Nhan Bertel.

That’s a great video. I had it on about 4 times throughout the day earlier this week, and I could happily listen again. Made me want to investigate the workstations they both have.
I haven’t contributed at all on this thread, but I do love that it exists.
Gerald Donald has been a huge influence on me and has remained my favorite composer for over a decade.
I think he is truly brilliant. His works are beautiful and somehow simple and complex at the same time.
I’ve listened to all the Arpanet material, yet never heard this notion of Arpanet being produced entirely with an Arp 2600. If this is true, it is very impressive.
To be blunt, any claim that x was made with y by an accomplished musician without a citation quoting that being said unambiguously by the person in question is worth nothing.
True facts. I remember all the speculation when Analord started coming out: “Oooh, it’s all 100% analog, recorded to tape, cut to vinyl with no digital stage” etc, etc. Complete bollocks of course.
Right, thats crazy that there were people could recognise the oscilator and filter of 303 in a song or Enya sample in D50. I totally agree, complete bollocks.
For the name… I always assumed GD’s “Arpanet” was just referencing the early internet “Arpanet”… and didn’t have anything to do gear.
For the music, Wireless Internet is a straight up “Drexciyan” classic IMO… and Quantum Transposition is a peerless masterpiece. I had to snatch up that red vinyl reissue before it sold out
I understand being curious about sound design, but completely trying to copy Drexciya’s sound or any other artist for that matter, beyond personal exploration, is really disingenuous!
Go listen to his interview, where he talks about avoiding the club and not listening to other artists because he knows they will influence “his sound” and the doesn’t want their poisoned audio affecting his style.
Sure you can call yourself an artist by running a xerox machine, but real “art” only comes from you seeking the truth in your sound and the choices you personally made to get there.
This is not a discussion on sampling, but on creativity! Find your own sound!
Hey, I’m perfectly happy doing Burial rip-offs to give to YouTube music library for use on lo-fi study tunes videos with anime screencaps. If Drexciya had the same kind of potential then I’d be ripping them off too!
Truth
I don’t really do that, and agree with you to an extent, but as we all well know there’s no creation from the void (unless you’re the big man upstairs). Stinson and Donald were embedded in a very healthy music scene and were confident enough in their own vision to forge a unique path within it, but they sure as shit did know about other people’s music, whatever they may say.
The irony of that being that by his own admission Burial was trying to rip off El-B and created a very original signature sound because he wasn’t very good at it and tried to obscure that with lashings of reverb etc.
A good chunk of the original and interesting music that’s ever existed came about by taking inspiration from someone else and not quite being able to replicate it… It’s only really a problem when it’s done by a really competent mimic but most people will have at least something of themselves leak into it no matter how hard they try.
I wouldn’t ever set out consciously to ape someone either but there’s a wide spectrum between knock-off and 100% original… And the latter never really exists. I mean Drexciya had funk, electro and Kraftwerk, for a start.
That aqualung version sounds like it’s been been through the flattest EQ ever and then played back via some PC speakers bought in 2001 in Tottenham Ct Road for £9.99
There was a live performance video (im guessing from his home studio) during 2020 quarantine with arturia matrixbrute and prophet 6 in the scene. Dont be so quick on assumptions ;).
