Just to update on this, Dreadbox also suggested the same and you were both correct. It was just the cable, or more specifically, the little switch I got to sit between the mains plug and the USB cable since the unit doesn’t have its own power button. Shoulda guessed that would be the culprit but it worked completely fine for the last couple of years
This makes sense because I had been using the same usb cable (one that came with a Novation mono station) for several months and now that I think of it, I haven’t had the issue since. Good to know my unit isn’t faulty.
I know their working on the abyss 2

Howdy folks. Bought used Typhon and would like to reset patches to factory. Just a matter of doing a factory reset? And I didn’t see how to perform reset in manual? Thanks in advance.
I’m pretty sure you do it in the bootloader state. When updating firmware, you need to backup your presets because it deletes them (IIRC). So you could try that out, should work
Appreciate the help! Will give it a shot.
Howdy y’all ! I’ve had a Typhon since 2021, but have been using it occasionally because of some audio quirks that were difficult to swallow in the studio. I guess this is all relative to the USB power equipment I’ve been using (mainly the included USB cable plus different phone chargers).
These days I’m really intent on using the device as an external effect for my next set, but I’ve had these quirks again. It also seems that when the line in signal is too high, I get saturations - not granular or anything fancy, diracs of kinds, peaks of pure strong full volume noise. This might also be some reaction to extreme bass modulation in the input (i’m inputing full pieces with drums, bass, vocal samples, synths…). When it works it’s a bliss - despite sometimes feeling a little sad about having to turn pages to access my effects - but when it quirks, it’s big.
— Here it comes ----
I also notice that when using a mono mini-jack cable to output my signal to the typhon, what i get as an output is a full mono signal, with a little bit of echoing of the signal on the right when using the effects. This seems like something that could be fixed maybe ? I mean, if the unit gets a mono input, as in only one tip and sleeve are detected, then this signal is mono, right ? I mean what are the odds of someone intentionally keeping the left hand side signal ? but the idea could require a physical upgrade, if this cannot be fixed in an OS update.
— Here it really comes -----
Let’s assume the signal is always clean and it’s all neat ; when mixing the effected output with the original sound on my analog mixer, i get a strange sensation of delay / phasing. There seems to be some latency in the signal, which means it’s a bit difficult to mix with the initial output. Maybe i can fix this by increasing manually the latency on the sequencer, but it seems far fetched.
Oh by the way, I meant to write this down in order to ask : does anyone have a clue on how to fix my issues? I am running version 4.1 and have reset the machines several times over the years.
Could there be irreparable damage due to powering issues ? In that case how do you get a Dreadbox unit repaired ? Send to head offices or collaborators over the world ? Btw, if we come to Athens, can we visit ?
Dreadbox repaired a nyx I had years ago … I just emailed them and it was easy.
They repaired my Antiphon really quickly too (by post from France) - actually, my Typhon is playing up as a couple of sliders are malfunctioning, making neighbouring values jump erratically on every screen - so I’m going to have to send it off to Dreadbox at some point to see if they can fix it.
How many people are still rocking the Typhon? Or have you sold it for another mono in the meantime?
I had it but sold it for some reason …
I’m now looking for a solid mono synth, tinny, knobby, characterful and quite versatile for baseline, lead and drone.
I put it against the Uno synth pro X and I think the uno sounds better as a traditional mono synth but the typhon can go really far for weird drone .
A Typhon you mean ? ![]()
Ready to drone…
Not suiting your specs concerning size, but the Pro 800 should be my next analog synth.
I even thought about selling Typhon if the Pro 800 suits me as bass/mono, but I’d like to keep it…
I still have mine. I think it’s absolutely wonderful. I think it offers such a wide array of interesting sounds, and the fact that I can modulate patches to the extend that it offers, while also saving them, really makes me a happy camper
To me, it has that “Dreadbox factor” that I adore. It can be replicated with lots of other synths, but the character is there from the get-go with this one, and takes no time to get interesting.
I hope they expand on the concept, and that the Murmur 2.0/Abyss 2.0 (or whatever their next big synth is going to be named) will lend a lot from the Typhon in terms features. I especially like the mix of analogue and digital, and the effects.
I sort of think of the Typhon the same way I think of the Microfreak; that it’s bigger than the sum of its parts, somehow.
Its particular character is pretty specific, and I don’t always want/ need that. However, when I’m looking for a more aggressive mono sound, it shreds. I’ve had a lot of fun trying to do acid-ish basslines with it, and I find it “good enough” though not fantastic for doing traditional mono stuff.
The downside for me is that I dislike designing sounds on it - using the sliders to navigate parameters is a pain, and it’s often easier to just make a new patch from scratch than trying to find everything on a preset I’ve sent an LFO or Envelope to in order to tweak it.
Typhon FTW!!! I’ll never sell mine. It’s too awesome.
I’ll never sell mine too. For me, it’s the Mono synth. Plus sometimes effects are very useful. It has a character that I’ve not seen in another synth. The reverb is mysterious, it remembers me a lot the movie Conquest by Lucio Fulci. Foggy landscapes of Greece.
Thanks guys for the feedback, looks like a keeper ! I may take the plunge again.
It’s an amazing box.
I use it for techno with AR, very efficient. The knobs, once understood, are pertinent and offer the necessary and useful tools to bring life to your pattern.
Then, with light training, it’s doable to get into the menu and makes nice or drastics evolutions of the sound and notes/rythmic.
Apart of that, it’s pleasant little box to play alone, for drones as @sezare56 example few posts above.
Keeper ? Yes. Futhermore the 2nd hand market won’t give you a lot for your unit, but offer great price for acquisition.
