Do I really need another 303 clone?

I have both Acid V (vst) and TD-3 which I love the sound of but loath programming so I end up sequencing with Live and tweaking parameters when I’m recording, great fun. But my head keeps getting turned by the Cyclone TT-303 as the sequencer looks a breeze and I imagine it’s easier to ‘play’ too. Maybe a nicer pairing to my Digitakt 2 in that respect? Before anyone suggests anything more pricey the £280 tag on the TT-303 would be my limit.

Or do I just learn to love and live with the TD-3?

I think that TD3 is an excellent machine. I don’t know how far is from the original but for me, it sounds stellar. Even the distortion seems to me perfect.

So in my opinion TT303 is redundant. I’ve been sequencing TD3 via computer and works very well.

I suppose the obvious question is whether you’ve tried sequencing the TD-3 with the Digitakt yet?

The TT-303 sounds better than the TD-3 so go for it. Easier to program too. Thomann has them for £233 delivered.

Edit: IMO :sunglasses:

I bought the TT-303 especially because of the generative sequencers.

For instance: in LAB mode, while playing live, I select the notes that are in the current key playing on my other synths, then select GENERATE bam! a random sequence follows my other synths. (You have 9 types of generate btw, and a MUTATE function that slightly changes the generated sequence)

Now if you don’t like the randomness of this? Well, just edit or program your own patch.
But I don’t have time for that  I love that the TT-303 just generates my sequences. And if don’t like it? I just press GENERATE again. Happy accident galore.

Sounds just great (a bit wonkey, a bit out of tune, typical analog behaviour) + easier sequencer than OG 303? TT-303 Wins.

PS: I also use it to sequence other gear. Used it recently on a OG Roland System 100+101 :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

No, not yet actually.

Yes.

EDIT to be less cheeky:
The thing that made the original 303 was ⅕ its sound and ⅘ the controls it exposed to sequence and shape the sound. TD-3 gives you an (affordable) originalist take on this. Acid V gives you a modern DAW “automate all the things!” version. The Cyclone is yet another, different vision. There’s some overlap, obviously, but at heart they’re not three 303 clones. They’re three different instruments with a 303’s timbre.

I did not know any of this! Very appealing.

Yeah I love mine too, don’t get me wrong. But I just don’t play with it in isolation like I do with my other hardware.

I’ve got a weakness for 303 clones but for some reason the TD-3 didn’t sound right to me. I’m not a purist at all, and maybe with more time I could have coaxed what I wanted out of it, but at the end of the day I couldn’t justify hanging on to it when I had better options.

IMO too. TT is great. And the pattern lab is super handy. Not many people seem to talk about it either but you can write your own patterns over the presets.

My main influence for 303 is hardfloor … they typically have multiple 303’s blending in over their tracks… different waveform / distortion/ loop lengths.

Buy a few 303 boxes plus make chains for extra filter / delay from digitakt.

Pattern lab is good , it’s not completely random … has a few templates for where the slides are and placement of the accent .

If you want to escape the OG 303 ‘sequencer from hell’ that comes with the TD-3, I would suggest the Donner B-1

Yeah you might laugh (it looks like garbage I admit), and I’m sure 303 purists will be up in arms but it sounds great IMO, has a better distortion than a TD-3 and a decent sequencer that actually makes sense, oh and can be had for £90 new.

(I’m currently sitting at three 303 clones myself, if the MB-33 counts as one)

All good points, thanks. Tbh my Monologue can do a 303 too. I think I will pull the trigger on a TT303 in the near future… maybe a B1 too…

On this note - do any of the non-Behringer 303s have the important parameters addressable over midi?

TB-03 (the boutique) is the only one i’m aware of

I agree with everything you said and have 3 TB-303s (for years, I’m not rich!) and a bunch of other clones, including TT, TB-03, B1, T-8, no TD though :sunglasses:

That’s unfortunate, but not surprising.

Avalon can do filter and trigger an envelope but it costs ££££££ and isn’t worth it imo.
