Do I need a midi merger for my Octatrack?

Yes, this topic has been done to death and I’ve looked through a bunch of topics trying to find an answer but I’m still unsure, so here we go again.

My setup is dead simple. I have a midi keyboard (a Craft Synth 2.0, but assume it’s any old midi keyboard sending note information only). I have the Octatrack in the middle, ofc. And I have a synth I want to send notes to (Cobalt8, but assume it’s any old midi synth).

Here’s what I want to do:

  1. Play notes on my midi keyboard to control the synth whenever I want – using OT midi thru works like a charm for this.
  2. Occasionally record stuff into the OT midi sequencer from the midi keyboard and then send that onto the synth – for this, I would need to use the OT midi out instead.

However, as I have the synth coming into OT on an audio thru track, I want to manipulate the thru track FX in real time as I play the midi keyboard – however, I can’t manipulate the audio track and play the midi keyboard at the same time because the auto channel setup requires me to be on the midi track sending notes to my synth – as soon as I leave the midi track, no notes are sent to the synth.

So, do I need a midi merger that receives the midi out and the midi thru from the OT and sends either to my synth? This is so that, regardless of if I want to use the OT midi thru to play the synth directly from my midi keyboard or the OT midi out to use the OT midi sequencer, both options are possible. Any help much appreciated!

Have you tried playing with the same channel as track / synth ? In that case, midi out act as a soft thru output, even in audio mode…

This sounds like it’s exactly what I want. Let me dig into the settings and see if I can get it working

Works perfectly, thank you so, so much! I set the midi keyboard and synth to channel 9 for soft thru whenever, with the same channel for my OT midi track(s) to use the OT sequencer whenever too

GAS averted!

Ha, trust me, I was trying all sorts, such as going through the computer, to avert having another box on the desk

I just quickly searched, but I’m not sure if this behavior is clearly stated in the manual, especially the fact that soft thru also works in Audio mode. If someone finds it…I remembered it from @Open_Mike posts, but I didn’t experimented it much, if ever…

Also, using midi track’s channel implies CC DIRECT CONNECT ON, even if set to OFF (works with Auto Channel only, hence 1 track only).

The only exception to this is if MIDI CC messages are sent to the MIDI channel of the active track. In that case, the Octatrack will behave as if CC DIRECT CONNECT was activated.

Yeah, it could be something for inclusion in the manual. And the solution was really simple!

Maybe it is already in. Not sure if it is clear about Audio mode.
It should be in the HOW MIDI IS ROUTED chapter imho
@eangman?

Hmmm I will have a look at it and see what can be done. Thanks for letting me know and sorry for being slow to reply.
