I can’t even. The quality and calibre. Madness. What was I even thinking throwing my hat in with never having made a jungle or drum and bass track ever.
Great playlist. I really have fun listening to all tracks. Decision-making will be tough. @surfacescan there is always a first time. even if you think, that your track might be worse than others (sometimes we rate our own music worse than other people), this is also a learning and feedback space. And a fun space too.
Great job overall, I have a slight preference for the work done on track 7. It’s an outside opinion : The abrupt cut brings something fresh and new, and I was immediately hooked. That said, the riffs and the wobble bass all come together in a sharp, punchy way, exactly how I like to listen, and how I like to try to share music. Thanks for this new release. And on top of that, the length is perfect, it leaves me wanting more and makes me want to listen to it again
I thought I’d post my favourite things about each track. If anyone would like any comments on what I did to the tracks or any feedback on anything specific (arrangement, mix, etc) I’ll send those privately or discuss in public if you prefer
1 - probably the best drum programming of the lot and the amens are really crisp. The sample choice and switches between full time and half time are excellent. IMO this was also the best mixed
2 - also great drum programming, particularly the switch ups at the end of phrases. Feels resolutely dnb but manages to capture the dub flavour and also give dub techno vibes. Nice individual style.
3 - I enjoyed the pummelling snare on this track but my favourite parts are the chord pads (very 90s jungle in a good way) and the high freq atmospherics, keeps things interesting
4 - love the distorted booming bassline & the way it arrives is super too. I like the rides. The jump up bassline that appears as a surprise is a clever idea
5 - the vocal sample is well chosen, how it leads into the halftime section is brilliant and the first amen drops when all the other samples drop out is really nice.
6 - this has excellent atmospherics and vocal sample choices, really telling a story and I like the bass sounds and glitches (reminds me of hip hop phenomenon by BT & Tsunami One) But my favourite bit is actually the part where the mids drop out leaving just the sub and the kick to breathe - could listen to that for ages!
7 - the sense of movement with the ghost kicks in the main break is excellent and the extra drum layers at transitions keep the tune really interesting. I also like the interplay in the contrasting bass sounds
Thanks again to everyone for trusting me to work on your stuff
Brings back memories of all the best part of when jungle music was the soundtrack to my life. Starts with those strings (omni trio esque?), then slams in with some proper vocals from Greensleeves. Love the sound effects. The thought that went into the chorus mashup - “If you continue to burn up the herbs… Revolution a come”. Deadly. and a masterclass on turning that drum break into bouncy rhythms - keeps changing. Deadly!
Number 2 for me: Track #2
I love the dub elements, the drum riffs, the bugging out fx dub sirens, the dark chords, the drum work and the driving bassline. Since I figured this battle is about paying homage and respect to the Greensleeves label, I tip my hat here for grabbing those samples and assembling
Number 3: Track #3
I like how it starts off with those Augustus Pablo Melodica at the start. Lays the foundation for a nice dubby rootsy track and then gets modern. Slams - has those old school chords mixed in. Dark Stranger! Well done.
Thanks for the chance to be part of this and major big up to @KingDuppy for organizing it. This is my kind of jam and I had a blast.
By the way, I’m going to a jungle/DnB show tonight with my lady for the first time in 20+ years! I will have my lighta ready.
At this point I would propose to avoid the celebration of the winner for this contest: everyone wins.
Now I’m genuinely interested in who played what. It happens that on the forum, we all express opinions, but words can be shaped, bent, or even used to hide the truth. When we play music instead, there’s no room for that: through playing, we reveal exactly who we are, without filters.
I’d like to know the authors behind all the songs
@KingDuppy Can I still vote? I just noticed that the deadline was yesterday. Somehow I thought it’s Sunday till Sunday. To be fair (as much as someone can be) i wanted to listen to all tracks a few more times. I think I need like one more day. Maybe I can manage also today.
