This time we’re digging into the KPM label:
Post a track from the KPM Music library (or a favorite use of one) in the thread.
Use a sample from the thread to make a drum & bass or jungle track.
You cannot use a sample from your own post!
Keep it under 6 minutes!

(Oh! and if anyone has an idea for future battles, plea se send me a note!)
I’m in the wall of sound phase at the moment, got a solid foundation, been playing with my levels and stuff for an hour or so today, probs start arranging tomorrow and start throwing some ideas around…
I’m a very uncreative phase at the moment. Feeling guilty I don’t / can’t / won’t contribute. But I’m watching and listening to all the stuff in these battle threads. I’ll be more active, this just needs to pass tho.
Okay, so I’ve been messing around with some of the tracks in the thread and I’m running up against a problem. It’s one I have a lot working in this genre space, so may as well turn it into a teaching moment if y’all will humor me.
I’ve got some good patterns going with my samples, but none are anywhere near up to a Drum & Bass or Jungle tempo. Whenever I try to bring them up past 140 or so they break apart. Or more like mush together.
So I started working backwards a bit—typing in a simple two step pattern in the sequencer and starting with that. But then I have trouble getting the sample to fit in the pocket I’ve created. I have to push them too high and mousey/clippy one way, or so slow/low the other way that they become incoherent
Any ideas? Am I just doing a bad job at sample selection?
Go for 140bpm, try slicing the samples; f.i. when it’s chords, spread them in the beat and put a delay behind them? Make them even shorter and filter them like a dub stab.
Go the other way: Try to make a drone out of them, maybe some granular fx, or paulstretch.
Or replace a sliced drumloop with short slices of the samples.
Search inside the samples you choose with 140bpm in your mind.
