DJ´s Corner

Hi thurrr. Been DJing since 1995, first as DJ Shiva and now as Noncompliant. Started on vinyl, adopted DVS like Serato, and now DJ on CDJs or my Pioneer DDJ-1000.

I am MUCH better at DJing than producing, mostly because I love DJing like nothing else. Synths are fun, but musical collage will always be my favorite fun.

First got decks in 1997. Some Soundlab DLP belt drives and a dodgy KAM mixer with no eqs lol. Think a couple yrs later was when I got my 1210s. Still got them.

Done the techno club nights for 10+years but now I just have a mix etc in the house and fire recordings onto my youtube page. Most sets I do now are using traktor and hardware synced up.

Here’s the DJ corner. Not used so much nowadays, but has been the scene of much enjoyment over the years. Got quite good at it at one point too!

i don’t know what “double my tempo” means but my 12" singles never did that to me, lol. just amazing eating total shit in front of all of Coachella because i guess you don’t know how sync works or something?

Quick question to all the DJs here: I never deejayed before, only music production for >20 y until now. I’d really love to try it out, but with absolutely NO ambition to do gigs or so, only for my personal love of good music and mixes, just playing around.
I. e. I don’t want to spend a lot of money. There seem to be a lot of options of cheap DJ controllers out there with different softwares.
Any recommendations how to accomplish that and what to choose? There is also the question what type of music source to use. I mostly listen to music via Deezer or YouTube nowadays. I own quite a lot of vinyls and CDs, but not in the genre I’d like to mix (House/Electronic and HipHop). Again, I don’t want to spend a lot of money, so while deejaying with vinyls seems to be the coolest way, it’s not an option here.

If you already own a computer or laptop get a controller for serato or rekordbox. Plenty of good value beginners models, I like pioneer and the ddj flx4 is a solid option.

For music I like to use Bandcamp, bleep, boomkat and Juno download.

Good advice but consider if you’re happy having to use your laptop when DJing. Personally I found Rekordbox with a controller a bit painful, the software is average at best and I didn’t like that I had to use the laptop and plug it in every time etc, I’m much happier with a standalone setup. It’s more expensive though, so a controller is probably a good way to get started

Yeah I never use a controller but they are great option for having a budget. Standalone all in ones your talking a grand and separate kit a few grand.

I use serato with control vinyl at home but luckily anywhere I play has nexus cdjs with rekordbox and if money is not an issue it’s my fav setup. Having your crates on usb that fits in your pocket is awesome, especially after years of carrying vinyl.

Played on this few weeks ago and it’s an amazing mixer. I could never afford one though

For sure yeah, as much as I wasn’t a huge fan of Rekordbox software setup, it does the job and it got me started for a few hundred quid.

Yeah that looks like a really nice mixer, I know someone who has one and really likes it. The new Alpha Theta rotary one looks cool too, I’ve never tried a rotary. But I’m pretty happy with my Xone:92 tbh!

The club that has that mixer got the new rotary one also but not had a go on it yet. Apparently it sounds great though would feel weird mixing with knobs

Yeah, but as I said I really don’t want to spend too much and it will definitely be a just for fun thing. I’d plug it into my studio setup anyway, so turning on the pc to use it won’t be a big issue. Did anyone of you try the rekordbox app together with the controller?

Cool, yeah I used to have the DDJ-RX which used Rekordbox. It worked fine, some aspects of the software are a bit clunky IMO but the controller integration is great.

One advantage of using Rekordbox is that you can export your collection to USB and use it on CDJs with no hassle if you do ever play out.

I only “DJ” at home for fun and mental health haha. Just buy a Pioneer DDJ 200 for ~$150 and Rekordbox subscription. That’s all you need. I use SoundCloud for tracks and my “sets” and never recore anything. I just have fun.

I use traktor , there’s a lot of controllers out there quite cheap. … x1, f1 etc can start from £50 2nd hand
I tried subscription for music but recording a mix is disabled.

I bought a lot of cd’s through 90’s and 2000’s , so I typically go on soul**** and grab pre ripped 320k versions. Or buy new stuff from Bandcamp

For me, Traktor is a good way to begin DJ-ing because it visually replicates a hardware DJ rig. There are separate “decks”, a mixer section, a crossfader. No controller is necessary to begin playing around. There is a “native” keyboard mapping to get going without a controller, e.g., map the crossfader and you are in business. However for controllers, there is a MK3 version of their controller that can both browse / load tracks and also switch to a “mixer mode” for manipulating eq / fx. In other news, the new Alpha Theta standalone model (the blue one) has adopted the knobs for controlling loops that Traktor controllers have. For some reason people are passionate and loyal about brands, but It probably comes down to whether the standalone workflow of Serato or any of the million other ways of dj-ing appeal to you. iPad apps, standalone gear…etc.

That sounds exactly like what I want to do. Maybe I’d love to record some mixes for listening while commuting too. Maybe spiced up with some self produced loops
