What are you guys goto distortion/overdrive/fuzz guitarpedals - and guitarpedals in general for beats?
MXR108, Big Muff, Algal Bloom into a para eq pedal and a boss bass overdrive in exactly that order!
Edit: I can shape the sound and use one or multiple pedals, it’s great and flexible. For guitar playing I use the MXR a lot as it rolls off nice into clean. But if I want to fuzz out, it’s the Big Muff all the way, great great fuzz pedal that one.
Looking forward to varying input here. As a newcomer assembling a home studio I have yet to venture into the effects units territory as yet. Will be interested to hear people different takes on pedal, other dedicated hardware, software effects and how they stack up against the effects built into hardware units themselves, synths and drummachines…
A vote for Big Muff Pi. I’ve got an old school one and it has character. There is something weird about it how it creates really crisp distortion while maintaining great bass. In some ways I prefer the sound of distorted preamps, compressors and analog synth audio inputs to many pedals, so don’t write those off if you’re considering them.
EQD Data Corrupter.
I disagree about the muff. Mine is super wooly rather than crunchy and has a pretty limited palette, but then again there is so many variants of that pedal and I’m sure tons of variety in sound.
Heat is great at a lot of different things. Nothing sounds as classy as nice overdriven preamps, which can get pretty damn extreme. I’ve been playing with the idea of snagging a Correct Sound Custom pedal. It’s like a Sunn amp in stompbox form.
Complete with Sunn logo, even. Interesting.
For me it’s been a knackered Boss feedbacker/distortion since the early 1990s - stomping on the pedal for intense feedback’s sometimes quite useful; a Zvex Box of Metal for all the right tone-shaping controls, and especially the nice clean gate for when gating’s needed; and a Dave Hall VT-2 Twin Bass twin-valve pre-amp for adding ridiculous amounts of crunch and fuzz, especially when the germanium circuit kicks in. But this is for electric bass - it’s probably time to try the VT-2 in particular with some drum machines…
Ohh, that correct sound pedal looks nice - and it would fit nicely in my guitar set-up, when not destroying beats. But isn’t they hard to find?
But I’m into buying cheap stuff, if I had money I think I would go for sherman filterbank or maybe a heat.
I’ll buy a RAT in a couple of days, looking forward to try it out on some beats
I like the RAT a lot.
The Correct Sound stuff can be had pretty easy on Reverb from the looks of it. I’ve been wanting to use it in conjunction with my Roland keyboard amp for tracking synths and bass through.
I’m a huge fan of fuzz for guitar. After loads of trial and error, I’ve settled on an EQD Hoof and an Analogman Sun Face (NKT Red dot).
A couple other favorites (non-fuzz) are a Catalinbread SFT and Wampler Black 65.
Have tried any of these on drummachines/beats?
I like Germainum OD on Machinedrum a lot
I had posted this elsewhere on the forum…
The J Rockett WTF pedal is a great overdrive/fuzz pedal that makes use of the Tornita circuit design. A very wide range of coloration on tap - one of the best.
I’ve not tried it with anything other than my Chapman Stick, so no comment on how it would work with line level audio.
Here is a great demo/review…
No. For drum machines I think I’d want something stereo and made for line level, like an Analog Heat.
If you have an MS20/mini kicking around, don’t sleep on the external input. It distorts really nicely when driven and the sound runs through both filters and the VCA too. A bit of a hassle to use minijacks admittedly, but it’s worth the trouble.
For more subtle distortion I really like my Way Huge Pork Loin, it roughs up sounds gently and brings out loads of nice harmonics. Good on bass too because it has a clean blend.
I love Tripps. He makes the Pork & Pickle now too.
Anyone run their guitar through a Korg Monologue? I just made the neighbor’s kid cry, it’s awesome!
I was just looking at the Line6 Hx Effects unit for this.
For what it’s worth, I tour with a Line 6 Helix… I run everything through it onstage (guitar, vocals, keys, drum machines, etc.), and there are countless distortion options that work beautifully with beats. I actually have a patch designed specifically for running my Tempest through, which employs two amp models, a filter, four distortion blocks, two different delay algorithms, and a reverb - all in stereo, with three expression pedals to ride levels. Anyway, I don’t know how much of what’s in the Helix is carried over to the smaller stomp pedals, but if it’s anywhere near the same, there’s lots you can do there…
Cheers!
Thanks for the great info.
