This a real noob question but how can I turn the digitone files into audio. It’s all new enough to me.

Hey, the digitone backup files can only be read by the digitone. They contain sysex information about patterns, patches and sounds etc.

What you want to do to get audio to your computer depends on a couple of things because you have more than one similar route to reach the same end result.

  • you can use elektron’s overbridge software and either record to your daw as a multitrack recording over USB or you also have the option to use audio capture inside the overbridge app which will record exactly what your machine puts out as a stereo mix file and then track stems, also fx stem if you want it. It will output a wav file (or files) to the folder of your choice.
  • you can record directly into a daw without overbridge as a single stereo mix of the mains by assigning the digitone as an audio interface and arming a track in the daw to record. When you start the transport audio should record to that track in your daw but it will only be the stereo mix without the stems.
  • same as the prior method but you can mute three tracks and record 1 at a time to create stems.
  • you can also record out of the mains into a digital recorder and move those files to the computer.

By this point you get that the gist of it is that you record the audio and that creates a file, but that backups are not audio, they just contain settings.

All of the set up necessary (in the digitone menu I mean) is explained in the manual and it’s pretty straight forward. If you can’t figure it out I’m sure if you post back here someone can give you a quick rundown on the necessary settings.
